Yuval Barak

NEW LONDON, Conn. (October 8, 2019) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team did just enough to defeat Coast Guard, 4-3, on the road on Tuesday afternoon.

Franklin Pierce improves to 3-1 on the season, while Coast Guard falls to 0-2.

The Ravens won four of six single matches on the day on the way to a 4-3 win. The youth movement was on full display for Franklin Pierce as a quartet of freshmen secured singles victories. Joel Cladera (Palma de Mallorca, Spain), Joshua Arnold (Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago), Alejandro Ortiz (Madrid, Spain) and Paul McLellan (Nairobi, Kenya) all picked up wins, at third through sixth singles, respectively. Cladera notched a 6-3, 6-3 win; Arnold rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 victory; Ortiz battled back for a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) triumph; and McLellan cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win.

The Bears found more success in the doubles, as Coast Guard took two of the three matches. Junior Chris Lansing and sophomore Lucas Arora took down sophomore Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) and the reigning Northeast-10 Player of the Week in senior Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) at first doubles, 6-2, while freshman Banks Evans and junior Ryan Casey defeated Ortiz and McLellan, 7-6 (4), at third doubles.

Arnold and Cladera won their doubles match, 6-3, in what was a strong out for the pair of freshmen at second doubles.

The Ravens return to action on Sunday, Oct. 13, when they travel to Lewiston, Maine, for a non-conference matchup with Bates. Match time against the Bobcats is set for 1 p.m.
