QUINCY, Mass. (September 25, 2019) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team opened its 2019-20 season on Wednesday afternoon with a blowout win over Eastern Nazarene. The Ravens took the 8-1 win while losing just one match in singles play on the road.

With the win, Franklin Pierce opens its season at 1-0, while Eastern Nazarene falls to 0-2.

The doubles matches were all won by the Ravens. Sophomore Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) and senior Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) took an 8-4 win at first doubles. Junior Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago) and freshman Alejandro Ortiz (Madrid, Spain) teamed up as well to take their opponents, 8-5, at second doubles. Finishing up doubles play were freshman Joshua Arnold (Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago) and freshman Paul McLellan (Nairobi, Kenya), who won their match at third singles, 8-6.

The singles match also went extremely well for Franklin Pierce. Gordon battled back from a first-set loss against senior Henry Siercke to post a 6-7, 7-8, 10-8 victory at first singles. It was straight sets at second singles, where Barak took a 6-2, 6-2 win over freshman Mecena Salles.

Patrick also won in straight sets, as he took a 6-3, 6-0 win at third singles against senior Alberto Escobar. At fifth singles, Ortiz took a 6-1, 6-4 win over senior Kyle Pierson and, at sixth singles, freshman Joel Cladera (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) captured a 6-3, 6-0 win over freshman Sven Grunenwald.

The only point the Ravens surrendered on the day came at fourth singles, where McLellan suffered a first-set tiebreak loss on the way to a 7-6, 6-2 defeat to sophomore Diego Rodriguez.

The tennis team will be back at it on Friday, Oct. 4, against the Babson College Beavers in Wellesley, Mass.
