Yuval Barak

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. (February 8, 2020) – The Franklin Pierce University men's tennis team -- which is ranked eighth in the East Region by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association -- faced a stern test in the opener of the spring portion of its season on Saturday. The Ravens suffered a 7-0 defeat, as they traveled to take on No. 17 nationally ranked Concordia (N.Y.), which is currently ranked first in the East Region.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-5, while Concordia -- which played no head-to-head matches in the fall -- opens its campaign at 1-0.

In doubles play, Franklin Pierce was most competitive at first doubles. Senior Yuval Barak (Zicron Ya'akov, Israel) and sophomore Preston Gordon (Essex Junction, Vt.) held their own, but were defeated, 6-4, by Concordia juniors Michele Fenoaltea and Tobias Lentz. Concordia took both second and third doubles by identical, 6-2 scores to sweep the doubles point.

In singles play, the most competitive match of the day came at third singles. Junior Nkrumah Patrick (Tunapuna, Trinidad and Tobago) took the first set from Henry Masters, but the Concordia junior battled back for a 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 victory. At second singles, Gordon was clipped in a pair of tight sets by Lentz, who scored a 6-4, 7-6 (5) win. The same fate befell freshman Joshua Arnold (Scarborough, Trinidad and Tobago) at fifth singles, where he suffered a 7-5, 6-4 defeat at the hands of junior Tomer Mendler. Concordia took first, fourth and sixth singles in straight sets as well, to round out the 7-0 shutout.

The Ravens return to the court on Tuesday, Feb. 18, when they travel to Saint Michael's for their Northeast-10 Conference opener at 3 p.m. in Colchester, Vt.
