Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse

HILLBURN, N.Y. (March 1, 2020) – The Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse team scored six first quarter goals and never looked back as they rolled to a 16-4 victory over Dominican (N.Y.) College in their season opener. With the win, Franklin Pierce opens up their season 1-0. Dominican drops to 1-2 with the loss.

Things got off to a fast start for the Ravens who scored just 1:03 into the game. Freshman Sean Daly (Kingston, Mass.) got his collegiate career off to a productive start scoring his first career marker. A goal from Colin Doherty (Reading, Mass.) would give the Ravens a 2-0 lead within the opening five minutes and the offensive onslaught would only continue.

Daly would continue to lead the charge assisting on the third goal of the quarter from Mike Alibrandi (Holliston, Mass.). Doherty would tack on his second as Dominican keeper Patrick Gifford was left out to dry by his defense. The Ravens would not hold up as Daly double-dipped to extend the lead to 5-0. Everybody was factoring into the offense early as the Ravens dominated the opening frame.

The Ravens weren't finished yet as they punctuated the quarter with their sixth goal. Freshman attack Owen McCormack (Hampstead, N.H.) scored his first career collegiate goal with Alibrandi picking up the assist.

Gifford was mercifully relieved from the contest after allowing six goals on 14 shots. He was saddled with the loss and would give way to Steffen Peabody. The Ravens' welcomed him into the game with a goal 45 seconds into the second quarter. Gavon Power (Biddeford, Maine) put a shot past Peabody to extend the lead to 7-0. The Ravens would quickly add their 8th goal of the contest as Doherty would complete the hat trick with his third of the game. The senior attack scored five goals across seven appearances last season and needed only 16:51 to bury three goals for his first career hat trick.

Joe DeRosa would get Dominican on the board making it an 8-1 game. It didn't faze the Ravens who would rattle off the next four goals. Daly would respond to complete the hat trick, McCormack followed with his second of the game 18 seconds later to give the Ravens their 10th goal. Caleb Ikkela (Onset, Mass.) picked up the assist and would score as well for his first career collegiate tally.

Dominican tacked on three goals in the third quarter but Pierce maintained a comfortable 14-4 lead. The freshmen continued to lead the way for the Ravens, Daly recorded his fourth goal of the contest at the beginning of the third quarter, and McCormack would complete his own hat trick as well with three minutes left in the period.

The fourth quarter was the quietest of the afternoon. The Ravens would add two more goals to increase their lead to 16-4. A pair of freshmen in the form of Austin Varney (Fiskdale, Mass.) and Nathaniel Girardin (Brunswick, Maine) would each score their first career collegiate goals. In total, the Ravens received 10 of their 16 goals from first-year players.

Ravens' keeper Justin Lorenzo (Goshen, N.Y.) played the bulk of the action stopping 10 of 14 shots for the win. Nathan Taylor (Danville, N.H.) and Tim Perlin (Swampscott, Mass.) both appeared off the sideline for the final 15 minutes, stopping four shots combined. Peabody played 40 minutes of relief and stopped 12 of 22 shots for Dominican.

From top to bottom the Ravens' controlled the game in every statistical category. In total Franklin Pierce fired 67 shots, scooped up 38 ground balls, went 23-of-27 on clears, and 13-of-23 on face-offs.

Franklin Pierce returns home on Saturday for their first game on Sodexo Field versus non-conference opponent Post University at noon.
