#19 Assumption Stingy Defense Too Much for Ravens to Handle
WORCESTER, Mass. (April 6, 2019) – Franklin Pierce University men's lacrosse senior midfielder Jake Castorf (Holbrook, N.Y.) scored a team-high two goals and chipped in one assist during the Ravens 13-7 defeat to Northeast-10 Conference and no. 19 nationally-ranked Assumption College Saturday afternoon on the Multi-Sport Stadium Field. With the win, the Greyhounds sprint ahead to 7-3, 4-2 NE10 while the Ravens overall mark evens up at 4-4 and they drop to 2-4 in league play.
Both of Castorf's goals were unassisted. Mike Alibrandi (Holliston, Mass.), Lawrence Bastianelli (Rocky Point, N.Y.), Luke Tracy (Windham, N.H.), Josh Dorr (Brunswick, Maine) and Domenic St. Laurent (Amherst, N.H.) all added single scores for Pierce. Sophomore goaltender Justin Lorenzo (Goshen, N.Y.) stopped 12 shots in the loss and fell to 4-4 on the campaign.
Assumption was led by five two goal scorers. Jason Hughes and Brett Jennings tallied two goal and one assist efforts for the hosts. Colby Hamwey improved to 7-3 on the year making 16 saves for the hosts. The Greyhounds held the advantage in shots (55-to-38) and scored two of their markers on their five man-advantage chances. They scooped up 36 groundballs to the Ravens 29 as well.
The Greyhounds tacked on four straight goals to begin the contest. A Dan Farrell to Spencer Marocchini connection started the spurt and Travis Reid ended it with two goals of his own including another assist by Farrell on the advantage.
FPU would outscore Assumption 3-1 over the final three minutes of the first quarter. St. Laurent broke the scoreless drought for the Ravens via an unassisted tally at the 3:13 mark. Dorr dished a pass to Alibrandi burying a shot into the back of the cage. On the ensuing faceoff, Bastianelli won the loose ball and went down and sniped a close attempt cutting the Raven deficit to 5-3 at the end of the first.
The Ravens stayed within two goals three minutes into the second when Castorf cashed home his first score. Assumption held the Ravens scoreless through the remainder of the second adding three more goals to lead 9-4 at the intermission.
Pierce pulled the score to 9-6 late in the third quarter following a Dorr and Castorf goal. Owen Peterson III made it a four-goal game with 14 seconds left in the period. In the beginning of the four, Tracy brought his team back down three 10-7 however the Hounds did not allow another Raven goal and threw three into the net to clinch the 13-7 win.
The Ravens return home to Sodexo Field on Wednesday when they battle no. 4 nationally-ranked Merrimack College at 3:30 p.m.
