Men’s Ice Hockey Stopped at Trinity, 12-1
HARTFORD, Conn. (November 26, 2016) – Senior forwards Ryan Cole (2-3-5) and Sean Orlando (3-2-5) tallied five points each on Saturday afternoon, as Trinity dealt the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team a 12-1 defeat in non-conference play at Albert Creighton Williams Rink. Freshman forward Kyle Gosselin (Haverhill, Mass.) scored the lone goal in defeat for Franklin Pierce.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 6-3-0 and has its program-record winning streak snapped at five games. With the win, Trinity improves to 3-1-0.
Trinity opened the scoring just 72 seconds into the proceedings on Saturday in the Insurance City. Sophomore forward Mark Knowlton tallied his first goal of the season at the 1:12 mark, off of an assist from senior forward Ethan Holdaway.
Franklin Pierce came up with the answer on the power play at the 7:26 mark, cashing in on its first of seven chances with the man-advantage. Gosselin put away his first collegiate goal, while freshman forwards James Morrissey (West Haven, Conn.) and Alex Lester (Methuen, Mass.) provided the assists.
It was all downhill from there for the Ravens, who surrendered four goals over a span of 7:25 after the midpoint of the period, to start things on their way to the 11-goal defeat. It was four different goal-scorers for the Bantams over the remainder of the stanza, as Cole, freshman forward Adam Anderson, junior forward Tyler Whitney and junior forward Bradley Buvinow all found the back of the net. Cole's goal stood as the eventual game-winner, and he provided an assist along the way as well.
Trinity blew the game wide open in the second period, with five more goals, on its way to a 59-19 advantage in shots on goal on the afternoon. The Bantams struck for four power-play goals in the stanza, as part of a 7-for-13 outing with the man-advantage. Orlando tallied 2-1-3 in the middle frame, while Cole scored a goal and added a pair of assists. Freshman defenseman Liam Feeney and sophomore forward Michael Delisle both scored in the period as well, while the former chipped in an assist.
A pair of late third-period goals finished off the 12-1 win for the Bantams. Orlando finished off his hat trick at the 16:11 mark, while junior forward Anthony Sabitsky -- who had four points (1-3-4) on the day -- capped the scoring at 19:27.
Junior goaltender Tom McGuckin (Clayton, N.J.) logged the first 35:20 in net for Franklin Pierce and took the loss (6-3-0) after making 23 saves against 30 shots on goal. Senior Austin Christopher (Winthrop, Mass.) went the rest of the way between the pipes for the Ravens and made 24 saves against 29 shots. At the other end of the ice, freshman netminder Tedy Loughborough (2-0-0) picked up the win in the crease for Trinity, after making 14 saves against 15 shots over the opening 55:02. Sophomore Matthew Millendorf took over for the final 4:58 and stopped all four shots he faced.
The Ravens return to the ice on Sunday, Nov. 27, when they travel to Wesleyan (Conn.) for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Spurrier-Snyder Rink in Middletown, Conn.
