Men’s Ice Hockey Falls on Road at SUNY Geneseo, 7-2

Murphy Murphy scored his first goal of 2014-15 on Saturday afternoon at SUNY Geneseo.

GENESEO, N.Y. (November 15, 2014) – Junior goaltender Kyle Moran (Marshfield, Mass.) and freshman goaltender Etienne Roy (Saint-Henri, Quebec) combined for 45 saves on Saturday afternoon, but were also beaten seven times as well, as the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team suffered a 7-2 defeat on the road at SUNY Geneseo in non-conference play at Ira S. Wilson Ice Arena. Senior forward Tyler Brickler had two goals and an assist to lead the way for SUNY Geneseo.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-4-0 (0-1-0 Northeast-10), while SUNY Geneseo improves to 4-2-0 (3-2-0 SUNYAC).

SUNY Geneseo scored the only three goals of the first period on Saturday afternoon, in a span of 4:03. Brickler opened the day's scoring at the 12:49 mark, with his fifth of the season, while sophomore defenseman Derek Stahl and sophomore forward Stephen Collins provided the assists. Just 89 seconds later, junior forward David Ripple made it 2-0 with his second goal of the campaign. Senior forward Ryan Stanimir and junior forward Ryan Donnelly dished out the assists at 14:18. Another 94 seconds after that, Collins and Brickler set up the first collegiate goal for freshman forward Sotiris Athanasopoulos at 16:52. The final goal of the stanza would ultimately stand as the game-winning goal.

Franklin Pierce would strike twice in a span of 24 seconds to close within a goal, at 3-2, early in the second period. At 3:24, junior forward Paddy Murphy (York, Maine) scored his first goal of the year, off assists from freshman forward Evan Marek (Enfield, Conn.) and sophomore forward Connor Mauro (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Then, at 3:48, freshman forward Jonathan Lee (Staten Island, N.Y.) put home his second of the season, off an assist from fellow freshman forward Brad Riccardi (Scarsdale, N.Y.).

From there, the Knights ran off the final three goals of the middle stanza to push the lead to 6-2. At the 5:26 mark, Athanasopoulos netted his second goal of the afternoon, while Collins chipped in his third assist and junior defenseman Nate Brown added a helper as well. Geneseo's special teams took over from there, as Brickler's second of the game came shorthanded and unassisted at 7:43. Freshman defenseman Pat Condon had the final of five second-period goals, as his first career score came on the power play at 10:51. Brown and sophomore forward Jack Ceglarski provided the assists.

The Knights tacked on the only goal of the third period to create the 7-2 final. Junior defenseman Matthew Hutchinson scored his first goal of the campaign, off assists from senior forward Zach Martin and sophomore forward RJ Burns.

Moran made his fourth straight start in net for Franklin Pierce, made 21 saves against 27 shots over the first 30:51, and took the loss (0-4-0) in net. Roy played the final 29:09 and finished with 17 saves against 18 shots. At the other end, sophomore goaltender Matt Leon turned aside 21 of the 23 shots on his goal to pick up the win (1-0-0) for SUNY Geneseo.

The Ravens return to the ice on Wednesday, Nov. 19, when they travel to Assumption for a Northeast-10 Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7:35 p.m. at Buffone Arena in Worcester, Mass. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday, Nov. 25 against Westfield State at 7 p.m.
