Crapanzano Provides Late-Game Heroics as Women’s Soccer Wins at Pace, 2-1

Anna Crapanzano

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (October 8, 2022) --The Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team pushed its win streak to three games on Saturday night with a 2-1 victory over the Pace Setters, though the game was not without its dramatics. The Northeast-10 Conference contest was tied at 1-1 in the waning seconds at Pace Stadium, before Anna Crapanzano (Milano, Italy) helped the Ravens pull out the victory. The junior struck with just 41 seconds to play, as she popped her second game-winning goal of the year.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 9-2-1 (6-2-0 NE10), while Pace drops to 4-6-2 (2-5-0 NE10).

The Ravens broke through in the first half, in the 16th minute. Freshman Ruby Conroy (Hawthorne, N.J.) started the scoring threat by firing a ball towards the box from the right corner. Sophomore Makenzie Shean (Agawam, Mass.) scored her first of the season to put the Ravens in front. She settled the ball from Conroy after a scramble in front of the net, then buried it to the right side of Pace freshman keeper Anne Fiore. The Ravens would hold on to the 1-0 lead to close out the first half.

The Setters were stagnant on offense to close out the first half but did not waste any time to open the second frame. Freshman Ava Viebrock evened the scoring for the Setters in the 48th minute, just 2:50 into the stanza, after she finished a beautiful through ball from sophomore Allison Carr. The goal was Viebrock's fifth of the season.

The Ravens looked for a response to the Setters goal. It appeared for a moment sophomore Eleanora Franco (Verona, Italy) would provide the go-ahead goal for the Ravens, but she hit the right post, which kept the game tied. Crapanzano showed her flair for the dramatic, as she scored the game-winning goal in the final minute, off an assist from freshman Lindsey Price (Plainfield, Conn.). Crapanzano launched a ball from about 20 yards out, and fired it into the top-left corner of the goal, out of the reach of sophomore keeper Annabella Cole, who came on in relief of Fiore to start the second half.

Sophomore Emilie Fox (Bridgewater, Mass.) played the full game for the Ravens in net and turned aside four of five shots to pick up the win (5-1-1). Fiore played the first half for the Setters, and made four saves against five shots as well. Cole (1-4-1) played the second half, made one save against two shots and suffered the loss.

The Ravens -- who moved into a tie for second place with Saint Rose -- are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 12, when they travel to Garden City, N.Y., to take on first-place Adelphi at 4 p.m.
