Rylee Skinner

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (November 13, 2021) – A pair of Ravens dropped career highs on Saturday night, as the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team opened its season with a 68-57 win over Holy Family in neutral-site, non-conference play at College of Staten Island. Senior Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.) went for 24 points, while fellow senior Rylee Skinner (Leominster, Mass.) added 20 of her own.

Franklin Pierce starts the season at 1-0, while Holy Family falls to 0-1. The Ravens wrap up their opening-weekend trip to Staten Island on Sunday, with a 1 p.m. game against Wilmington (Del.).

The Ravens opened the game with a heavy offensive, as they outscored Holy Family 20-7 in the opening quarter. Three made baskets propelled Franklin Pierce to a 6-0 lead, and the Ravens never looked back, taking a 13-point lead into the second quarter.

Franklin Pierce kept the offensive pressure up in the second quarter, with 20 more points, on the way to a 40-22 halftime lead. Carter did the vast majority of her damage in the first half, as she accounted for half of the team's offense with 20 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Meanwhile, Skinner was held to just five points in the first half, but responded with 15 in the second half.

The game was much closer in the second half. The two teams were even in the third quarter with 16 points each. The Tigers then outscored Franklin Pierce in the fourth, 19-12, but it would not be enough to surpass the first-half lead the Ravens had built earlier.

Carter used a mix of short-range and long-range attempts, as she mixed in 4-for-5 from behind the arc on the way to her 24 points. She also corralled a team-best eight rebounds to narrowly miss out on a double-double. For her part, Skinner's 20 points off the bench came on 8-for-12 from the floor and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.

For Holy Family, graduate student Anjelai Hayes was the only player in double digits, with 12 points on 4-for-11 from the floor. Sophomore Jenn Kokolus led the Tigers on the boards with nine rebounds and narrowly missed double figures with nine points as well.
