Saint Michael’s Edges Franklin Pierce, 15-11
Purple Knights use seven goal first period to claim victory
RINDGE, N.H. (March 28, 2007) - The Franklin Pierce men's lacrosse team suffered a tough 15-11 setback to Saint Michael's College in Northeast-10 Conference action this evening at Sodexho Field. The Purple Knights outscored the Ravens 7-0 in the first period and never looked to claim their fourth victory of the season.
Saint Michael's used a balanced offensive attack as ten players register goals. Junior Mike Boerma (Concord, Mass./Lawrence Academy) led the Purple Knights attack with a team-high five points on two goals and three assists. Classmate Mark Agostinelli (Dedham, Mass./Xaverian Brothers) was also solid, posting four points on three goals and one assist, while junior Gregory Lazarus (Evanston, Ill./Evanston) added three goals for three points.
Sophomore Ryan Boller (New Cannan, Conn./New Cannan) led the Franklin Pierce offense with a team-high five points on four goals and one assist. Freshman Brendan Rooney (Newton, Mass./Newton) collected four points on one goal and three assists, while senior Nick Cowden (Marblehead, Mass./Marblehead) chipped in with two goals scored.
Saint Michael's jumped out to an early 7-0 lead after the first period. Lazarus led the Purple Knight scoring surge with two goals in the frame, while Boerma recorded one goal and two assists. Freshman Mike Bednarz (Nashua, N.H./Bishop Guertin) chipped in with a goal and one assist in the period.
In the second period, Franklin Pierce fired back with four unanswered goals in a 5:48 span. Boller ignited the rally with three scores in the period, while sophomore Kyle Kruse (Bourne, Mass./Bourne) added one. Saint Michael's responded late in the period with three unanswered goals to take a 10-4 lead into the third frame.
In the third period both teams played even scoring two goals apiece. Junior Luke Ferreira (Farmington, Maine/Mt. Blue) and Brendan Rooney led Franklin Pierce with one goal apiece, while Mark Agostinelli and Mike Boerma netted goals for Saint Michael's.
Saint Michael's opened the fourth period with two quick scores by Agostinelli and freshman Nate Noble (Burlington, Vt./Burlington) to take a commanding 14-6 lead, but Franklin Pierce fired back with five, fourth-period goals to cut the Purple Knight lead to four. Boller started the Ravens scoring with his ninth goal of the season at 10:57 mark, while Cowden capped the drive with back-to-back goals late in the period.
Franklin Pierce had several scoring opportunities late in the final period, but sophomore goaltender Brendan Clark (Franklin Lakes, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) registered six saves to preserve the victory for Saint Michael's. Senior goaltender Ben Lek (Gaithersburg, Md./Col Zadok Magruder) made 11 saves for the Ravens.
Franklin Pierce (1-3, 0-2 NE-10) will be in action again on Saturday as it travels to Pace University at 1 p.m. Saint Michael's College (4-2, 3-0 NE-10) will travel to No. 6 ranked Bryant University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
