Rumsey Hat Trick Leads Men’s Ice Hockey to 5-3 Win at Johnson & Wales

Cody Rumsey

ATTLEBORO, Mass. (December 11, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team saw its first hat trick in nearly two years on Saturday night, as the Ravens skated to a 5-3, non-conference win on the road at Johnson & Wales. Sophomore Cody Rumsey (York, Pa.) did the honors, as he potted a pair of power-play markers and added an even-strength goal for good measure at New England Sports Village. Freshman Jacob Perrin tallied 41 saves in a losing effort for JWU.

With the win, the Ravens have won three of four and improve to 3-8-0, while Johnson & Wales falls to 2-9-0. Franklin Pierce was able to generate shots by volume on Saturday, somewhat uncharacteristically for the season thus far, as the Ravens piled up a 46-25 advantage on the night. It was only the fourth game of 30 or more shots for the team on the campaign.

The Ravens got off to a fast start in the first period. A centering pass from senior Chris Stevenson (Arvada, Colo.) found Rumsey across the slot on the power play. The sophomore dropped to one knee and fired into the lower-left corner to give the Ravens an early advantage on his second of the season at the 3:42 mark.

JWU evened things up with a power-play tally of its own at 18:14. Freshman Kevin Bite's initial shot glanced off the pad of senior netminder Adam Carman (Vestal, N.Y.) and fell to the ice. The resulting scrum in front ended with senior Jake Glod touching home his second goal of the campaign.

The period did not end there, however, as Rumsey found the back of the net again. A shot from sophomore Trevor Lawler (East Bridgewater, Mass.) produced a juicy rebound and an easy finish at 19:45.

It took Rumsey most of the second period, but at 15:15 he would complete his first collegiate hat trick, in the closing seconds of a 5-on-3 power play. Junior Tyler Rudek (Woonsocket, R.I.) took some open space before he found Rumsey wide open at the back door. It was the first hat trick for the Ravens since Alex Lester '20 scored three times in a 5-3 win at Saint Anselm on December 7, 2019.

Once again, the Ravens were not done for the period. Junior Dom Norris (Thurmont, Md.) made it 4-1 in the final 20 seconds, as he finished a pass from graduate student Paul Antkowiak (Salem, N.H.) at point-blank range at 19:41, for his fourth of the year.

The Wildcats took a shot at clawing their way back in the third, as sophomore Brendan Shandley tipped in his second of the year off a cross-crease pass from Bite on the power play at 2:14, to cut the deficit to 4-2. Stevenson and the Ravens answered just 54 seconds later though, at 3:08, after junior Jason Ladzinski (Norcross, Ga.) found the Coloradan down low. Stevenson's first of the year made it 5-2 and stood as important insurance down the stretch.

Shandley struck on the power play again, at 13:14, on another cross-crease feed from Bite, but the Wildcats could get no closer, and 5-3 stood as the final score.

Carman (2-1-0) finished the night with 22 saves against 25 shots to pick up the win in the Franklin Pierce crease. Perrin (0-5-0) was peppered with 46 shots and made 41 saves while suffering the loss for JWU.

Up next for the Ravens is a Northeast-10 Conference tilt at home against Saint Anselm to wrap up the first half. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
