Men’s Ice Hockey Slips Past Arcadia, 2-0, on First Day of Castleton Tournament

Conor Foley

RUTLAND, Vt. (November 26, 2021) -- A pair of goals bookending the second period were all that was in it on Friday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team worked off the Thanksgiving carbohydrates with a 2-0 win over Arcadia, on the first day of the Terry Moran Invitational, hosted by Castleton at Spartan Arena. Junior Josh Kippenhan (Hibbing, Minn.) struck early in the middle frame, while fellow junior Conor Foley (Nahant, Mass.) added some insurance late in the frame.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-7-0, while Arcadia falls to 1-8-0 in its inaugural season. Franklin Pierce will play in the championship game of the tournament at 4 p.m. Saturday, against the winner of Friday's second game, which features Rivier and host Castleton. The Ravens won their most-recent in-season tournament, when they took the Steve Hoar Invitational at Becker on Thanksgiving weekend in 2019.

Franklin Pierce scored once early in the second and once late in the frame, and that was it on Friday. First, sophomore Cody Rumsey (York, Pa.) helped win the puck behind the goal line for senior Chris Stevenson (Hibbing, Minn.), who carried it towards the right-wing corner. Stevenson sent a pass from there to the top of the right circle for Kippenhan. Kippenhan flipped a shot which fluttered over the shoulder of the goaltender and into the net at the 5:46 mark, for his first goal of the season.

Foley added what would be the game's final goal at 16:29. The play began deep in the defensive zone, where junior Vito Carlo (Las Vegas, Nev.) and senior Ryan Gorbett (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) combined to win the puck and ultimately spring Foley the other way. Foley already had four Arcadia players beat when he took the puck in his own end, and he used an outside-in move to dust the other one in the neutral zone. Now all alone, he snapped home his second of the campaign from just below the hash marks of the left circle on the rush.

Senior Kyle Martin (Westford, Mass.) minded the Franklin Pierce net and finished with 22 saves to pick up the win (1-2-0) and notch the Ravens' first shutout of the season, as well as the second of his career. Freshman Lucas Brine (1-3-0) stopped 15 of 17 shots at the other end in the loss for Arcadia.
