Late Comeback Not Enough, as Men’s Ice Hockey Falls at Post, 4-3

Franklin Pierce men's ice hockey

SHELTON, Conn. (November 16, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University men's ice hockey team turned on the offense late on Tuesday night, but the team's comeback bid came up short on the road at Post. Three goals in the third were not enough to erase a four-goal deficit, as the Ravens fell, 4-3, in Northeast-10 Conference play on the third floor of Sports Center of Connecticut. Sophomore Trevor Lawler (East Bridgewater, Mass.) scored his first collegiate goal in defeat for Franklin Pierce, while senior Brandon Brown made 37 saves in the victory for Post.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 0-5-0 (0-3-0 NE10), while Post improves to 2-4-0 (2-2-0 NE10).

Post held a 3-1 lead going into the third period, before the teams combined for four goals in a busy final 20 minutes. The Eagles picked up what would stand as an important insurance marker on the power play at 7:34. Freshman Patrick Murphy was stymied on his original shot from the slot, but was able to put away his own rebound at the right post for his first of the season.

Franklin Pierce set off on the comeback trail from there, though it would ultimately be too little, too late. The first of three Ravens' goals came at 9:23, after senior Stephen Jacobs (Hingham, Mass.) dumped the puck from the left point to junior Conor Foley (Nahant, Mass.) behind the net. Foley then found junior Dom Norris (Thurmont, Md.) out front for the latter's second of the year.

The Ravens then struck twice in just 62 seconds to make things interesting. Working on the power play, senior David Cambria (West Bridgewater, Mass.) sent the puck from the left point to sophomore Cody Rumsey (York, Pa.) in the left circle. Rumsey's shot was saved, but senior Ryan Gorbett (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) salted away the rebound from the right circle for his team-leading fourth of the year at 15:44. Just over a minute later, Foley put the puck on net off a faceoff in the left-wing circle. Lawler took a couple hacks at the rebound on the right side and eventually put away his first collegiate goal, at 16:46.

Franklin Pierce would get the goaltender off for the extra attacker over the final 1:50, but could not find the tying goal.

Earlier in the night, Post got things started early, after Franklin Pierce turned the puck over at the blue line while attempting to clear the zone. Sophomore Jack Engdahl had the initial shot on the play from the high slot, while freshman Chase Lapworth cleaned up the rebound below the hash marks for his second goal of the season, just 111 seconds into the proceedings.

The Eagles later pushed the lead out to 3-0 with a pair of goals in the final six minutes of the second period. The first came at 14:28, as junior John Krapian finished amid a scramble out front for his second of the season. Less than two minutes later, at 16:16, junior Niko Grollman deflected a shot by sophomore Nick Brewer for his first of the campaign.

Graduate student Ian Wallace (West Islip, N.Y.) finished with 32 saves against 36 shots and suffered the loss in net (0-3-0). Brown (2-3-0) made 37 saves against 40 shots at the other end of the ice to pick up the win for Post.

The Ravens are back in action on Friday, Nov. 19, when they travel to Saint Michael's for an NE10 contest at 7 p.m. in South Burlington, Vt.
