Siok makes career-best 49 saves

FREDONIA, N.Y. (January 14, 2011) – Junior goaltender Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.) set a new career high for the second game in a row with 49 saves on Friday night, but the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team was defeated, 7-2, by SUNY Fredonia in non-conference play at Steele Hall Ice Arena. Senior forward Jordan Oye scored twice and added two assists to total four points for SUNY Fredonia.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-13-0 (2-3-0 Northeast-10), while SUNY Fredonia improves to 7-9-0 (3-5-0 SUNYAC).

Franklin Pierce jumped to lead early on with the only goal of the first period. Just seconds after the end of a power play, sophomore forward Roscoe Sweeney (Falmouth, Mass.) banged home his sixth goal of the season, off assists from junior forward Kevin Quinn (West Linn, Ore.) and sophomore defenseman Matt Lopes (Auburn, N.H.) at the 7:17 mark.

SUNY Fredonia tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from junior forward Bryan Ross at the 7:55 mark of the second period. Oye and senior forward Alex Morton provided the assists on Ross' sixth of the year. Franklin Pierce briefly regained the lead at 2-1 when sophomore forward Adam Dallaire (Waltham, Mass.) stuffed home his own rebound to score his third goal of the season at 11:43.

From there, however, it was all SUNY Fredonia, as the Blue Devils scored the final six goals of the evening. Just 62 seconds after the Dallaire goal, sophomore forward Mat Hehr put home his sixth of the season, on assists from sophomore forward Ben Waldman and senior defenseman Steve Rizer, to level the score at 2-2. Another 44 seconds after that, Oye chalked up his team-leading 11th goal of the season to give SUNY Fredonia the lead for good, while Morton and Ross chipped in the assists. Junior defenseman Chris LaBella capped the second-period scoring with his first of the campaign, as he converted on a shorthanded, odd-man rush with assists from junior forward Billy Sanborn and sophomore forward Will McLaughlin.

In the third period, Ross and Oye would each pick up their second goals of the night, while Sanborn provided his first goal of the season to create the 7-2 final. Morton picked up his third assist of the night on the Ross goal, while Oye added the other helper to complete his four-point evening.

Siok made a career-best 49 saves, but was saddled with the loss (0-6-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. It was the second straight game in which he set a new high-water mark, as he made 48 saves last Saturday at SUNY Geneseo. It was the eighth 40-save effort of Siok's career and his fourth of the season.

Freshman Jeff Holloway started, made 14 saves and picked up the win (2-3-0) between the pipes for SUNY Fredonia. Fellow freshman Tyler Palmerton stopped all three shots he faced over the final 6:41 to close out the game for the Blue Devils.

SUNY Fredonia posted a 56-19 advantage in shots on goal on the night and went 0-for-6 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished 0-for-6 with the man-advantage and surrendered a shorthanded goal.

The Ravens return to the ice tomorrow afternoon, when they wrap-up the two-game weekend set at SUNY Fredonia. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Steele Hall Ice Arena. Franklin Pierce next plays at home on Jan. 29 against Stonehill at 7 p.m.
