WINCHENDON, Mass. (January
5, 2010) – Junior forward Brendan Carroll scored two
goals on Tuesday night to lead Saint Anselm to a 6-2 victory over
the Franklin Pierce University ice hockey team in Northeast-10
Conference play at The Winchendon School Ice Arena. Freshman
forwards Jonathan Schanke (Wallingford, Conn.) and
Michael Carr (South Boston, Mass.) scored the
goals for Franklin Pierce in defeat.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 3-7-2 (1-3-1 Northeast-10),
while Saint Anselm improves to 4-4-0 (2-0-0 Northeast-10) with the
victory.
Saint Anselm opened the scoring with a pair of quick goals early in
the first period and would not relinquish the lead the rest of the
night. Carroll opened the scoring two minutes into the contest with
his first of the season as his shot from the left point deflected
off traffic in the slot and found the back of the net. Sophomore
defenseman Chris Sullivan picked up the lone assist. Just 1:48
later, freshman forward Timothy King put home his fourth goal of
the season as he buried a one-timer on a 3-on-1 rush, with assists
going to junior forward Paul Snell and freshman forward Tucker
Mullin.
Franklin Pierce got a goal back in the second half of the opening
frame to pull within a goal. Schanke put a backhander from the slot
over the shoulder of Saint Anselm junior goaltender Kevin
Fairweather, off the crossbar and into the net for his fourth of
the season at the 12:13 mark. Senior forward Phil LaBreck
(Thornton, N.H.) and sophomore forward Justin
Adams (Homer, Alaska) picked up the assists on the
power-play tally.
Saint Anselm put the game on ice with three goals in the opening
3:46 of the second period. Junior forward Nick Wheeler scored his
first of the season on a blast from the right point 90 seconds into
the stanza, while junior forwards Ryan Butler and Coleman Noonan
picked up assists. At the 2:23 mark, Carroll stuffed home a rebound
at the right post for his second of the game. Junior forward John
Penny took the initial shot, while junior defenseman John Hennessey
added an assist as well. At the 3:46 mark, junior forward Paul
Snell found the net amidst a scramble out for his second of the
season, with assists awarded to freshman defenseman Ryan Clark and
King.
The Hawks pushed the lead to 6-1 with a power-play goal from Noonan
at the 10:16 mark of the second. Butler and Snell provided the
assists on Noonan’s team-leading sixth goal of the
season.
Franklin Pierce created the 6-2 final with a goal at the 2:08 mark
of the third period. Carr finished a 2-on-1 with a one-timer at the
left post off a feed from sophomore forward Anthony
Chighisola (Whitman, Mass.).
Sophomore goaltender Ben Siok (Holden, Mass.)
started in goal and made eight saves against 10 shots in the first
period for Franklin Pierce. Junior Matt McCarthy (Natick,
Mass.) played the final two periods, made 23 saves against
27 shots and took the loss (0-1-0) for the Ravens. Carroll made 20
saves and earned the win (2-2-0) between the pipes for Saint
Anselm.
Saint Anselm posted a 37-22 advantage in shots on goal in the game
and went 2-for-7 on the power play. Franklin Pierce finished
1-for-6 with the man-advantage.
The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Jan. 8, when they travel to
Buffalo State for a non-conference contest. Faceoff is scheduled
for 7 p.m. at Buffalo State Ice Arena in Buffalo, N.Y. Franklin
Pierce next plays at home on Tuesday, Jan. 12 against University of
New England at 7 p.m.
