Volleyball: Ravens Drop to 2-5 After Day Two in Kutztown

Kutztown, PA  (09/14/24) - The Franklin Pierce University women's volleyball team dropped their final game while in Pennsylvania. They fell 3-0 to the Falcons of Fairmont State.

HOW IT HAPPENED:  

  • The Falcons quickly pulled ahead after an initial 1-1 tie. Fairmont State went on a strong run, scoring 14 consecutive points, led by kills from Baylie Ostvig and Alexa Martin. FPU managed to score a few points, but the Falcons consistent offense allowed Fairmont State to take the set 25-8.  

  • The second set was competitive early on for both teams. The Ravens fought back from being behind 3-0 thanks to a service ace from Katholiki Koukia (Dodecanese, Greece) to tie the score at 8-8. The Ravens had the lead at 9-8, but the Falcons were quick to respond. Despite a late push by the Ravens with multiple service aces from Koukia, the Falcons held on and secured the set, 25-20.  

  • In the third set, Fairmont State took an early 4-0 lead. The Ravens rallied, scoring six straight points, aided by multiple service aces from Kori Garnhart (Colorado Springs, Colo.), to gain a 6-4 advantage. However, the Falcons quickly regained control, pushing their lead to 11-6. Despite some resistance from Franklin Pierce, Fairmont State maintained a comfortable lead and closed out the set with a final kill by Gabi Smith, winning 25-14, and securing a 3-0 match victory.  

INSIDE THE TOURNAMENT:  

  • Martina Spackova (Bratislava, Slovakia) led the team in kills with four. The team totaled 18 to the Falcons 44.  

  • Koukia had four service aces.  

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: FPU will play at home for the first time this 2024 season when they host the Purple Knights of Bridgeport. The match is set for Saturday, September 21 at 1 PM.
