Volleyball's Energy Hampered In 3-0 Loss At AIC

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (10/25/22) - In a Tuesday night Northeast-10 Conference volleyball matchup, the Franklin Pierce University women's volleyball team was dealt a three-set defeat by American International College on the road. In the 3-0 final, the Yellowjackets claimed victory by set scores of 25-19, 25-16 and 25-11.
The loss marks the fourth out of the last five matches for the Ravens, who drop to 7-11 overall (2-6 NE10). The Yellowjackets move to 23-2 (9-1 NE10) on the season with the victory.
Midway through the first set, the Yellowjackets put Pierce on notice with an 18-10 advantage. However, the Ravens took advantage of a series of AIC miscues, while adding in some of their own offense with kills from Annaka Lindstrom (Dudley, Mass.) and Ingrid Lindstrom (Dudley, Mass.), and a service ace from libero Morgan Schmutzler (Lockport, Ill.). The Raven rebuttal would be short lived, as AIC claimed four of the next five points, building enough of a lead to eventually win them the set.
Early on in the second set, the Ravens would battle to their first lead of the evening at 8-6 off of a pair of kills from senior Tessa Brandt (Foster, R.I.). In response, the Yellowjackets quickly returned to the lead with a 6-1 run, and would shortly thereafter pull away with a 7-2 run to establish a 22-14 advantage. Freshman Martina Spackova (Bratislava, Slovakia) would convert on two kills at the tail end for the Ravens, but the mountain proved too steep as AIC prevailed in the second set.
The Ravens fell behind 7-2 early in the final frame and simply couldn't recover as they appeared to be out of gas. On the other side of the net, AIC kept its foot on the gas with dominating scoring streaks, while Franklin Pierce was unable to string together consistent points. As a result, the match came to its end with a 25-11 third set final.
Mariah Robles (West Covina, Calif.) led the offense for the Ravens with a seven-kill night, along with three block assists at the net. Freshman Annaka Lindstrom recorded 21 assists with a .400 hitting percentage, and junior libero Morgan Schmutzler chalked up 15 total digs.
Volleyball will look to bounce back with another pair of NE10 road matchups ahead of them, when they will head to Adelphi University on Friday, October 28th (7 p.m.) followed by a matchup at Pace University on Saturday, October 29th (1 p.m.).
