Volleyball Concludes Non-Conference Slate With Loss to LIU Post
BROOKVILLE, N.Y. (September 23, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University volleyball team ended their non-conference schedule Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 (15-25, 16-25, 15-25) loss to Long Island University – Post. With the victory, the Pioneers improve to 11-3 overall while the Crimson and Grey fall to 3-10 on the campaign.
Franklin Pierce was led by senior middle blocker Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.) who amassed a team-high six kills to go along with three digs. Fellow middle blocker Abigail Garnhart (Colorado Springs, Colo.) chipped in four kills and senior setter Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) added 11 assists, seven digs and four service aces. For the Pioneers, Rachel Londot almost recorded a double-double with 10 kills and nine digs while hitting .429 on the afternoon. Two players tallied 14 assists each for the hosts as well.
In the first set the Pioneers held a 7-1 lead early following a service ace from Allie Ahearne. Back to back kills from St. Jean and outside hitter Danielle Varricchio (Boynton Beach, Fla.) cut the Ravens deficit to three, 11-8 before the hosts notched four straight points to bump the lead up to 15-8 .An Ahearne service error brought her squads lead down to five at 16-11 until LIU – Post scored four straight to give the hosts a 20-11 edge. Franklin Pierce would notch four more points this set, but the Pioneers ended the set with three straight points to take a 1-0 match lead.
Franklin Pierce held a 6-4 lead in the second set as five of their six markers came on Pioneer mistakes. LIU – Post took their first lead, 8-7 following a dual block from Elise Strange and Rachel Londot. A Strange attack error tied up set two at 11 all until the hosts recorded four more points in a row to break open the set at 15-11. The Ravens immediately took a timeout and regained a point on a ball handing error to come within three at 15-12. The Pioneers slowly built up their advantage as they outscored the Ravens 4-1 across the final possessions to take a lead 2-0 in the best of five series.
LIU – Post began the third set with a 6-1 scoring binge which was capped off by two straight aces by Ahearne. Two kills in a row by Garnhart brought the Pioneer lead down to three at 9-6, but the hosts would rack up nine consecutive points to hold an 18-6 advantage mid-way through the third set. An attack error gave FPU a point, but LIU – Post tallied three more markers to up the margin to 21-7. Franklin Pierce cut into the lead again as three aces in a row by Runge made the score 21-11. A Raven service error clinched the 3-0 victory for the Pioneers.
The Ravens conclude their four game road swing with a NE10 duel at Stonehill on Saturday, September 30th with gametime set for 1:00 p.m.
