Ravens Relinquish Two Set Lead, Fall to Le Moyne in Five

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (October 22, 2016) – Sophomore Katie Leidhold (Acushnet, Mass.) recorded a career-high 35 digs and added 23 kills, but it wasn't enough as Le Moyne College rallied from a two set deficit to defeat Northeast-10 Conference foe Franklin Pierce 3-2 (25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 21-25, 8-15) in Saturday afternoon matinee volleyball at Ted Grant Court. With the victory, the Dolphins move to 17-5, 7-2 NE-10 and the Ravens slide to 6-13, 2-5 NE-10 with the loss.

Leidhold bested her previous personal best in digs (28) that was set September 11, 2015 in a 3-2 victory over Caldwell. She also broke her season-best kill mark of 20 as well. Leidhold added a service ace and a block in the contest. Hannah St. Jean (Olympia, Wash.) chipped in 10 kills, a team-high five total blocks and one assist in the match. Following a strong all-around performance last night, freshman Danielle Varricchio (Boynton Beach, Fla.) racked up nine kills, 14 digs and blocked five kill attempts.

Hannah Runge (Deltona, Fla.) dished out a season-high 51 assists in the loss and moved into sole possession of second place on the all-time assist list with 2,421 helpers passing Stephanie Svorinic (2011-13). Karissa Hookstadt (2005-08) ranks first on the program record list with 4,306 assists.

The Ravens started out fast in the opening stanza scoring three straight points with a Leidhold kill from Runge as the first point. The Dolphins cut their set one deficit to one, 5-4 using an Andrea Buchanan kill. FPU continued to build their lead to seven 14-7 after a Runge service ace.

A few Dolphins points intertwined with Ravens points got the set closer before the Crimson and Grey's lead grew to back to seven thanks to a Hannah St. Jean kill set up by Runge. Their lead increased to a set high eight after Abigail Garnhart (Colorado Springs, Colo.) successfully killed the ball over a Dolphin attempted block. Four consecutive points by the hosts forced the Ravens to take a timeout.

After the stoppage, Jessica Miller took a set from Kendall Corcoran for a kill to make it 24-21, but a service error ended Le Moyne's run as FPU took the set 25-21.

In the second set, the Dolphins tallied five straight points to go up 5-0 early on. Four consecutive points from the Ravens ensued with Leidhold doing the most damage as she racked up a kill and a service ace. Kills by Natalie Casson and Jacquelyne Ghindia made it 7-4 Dolphins before the Ravens took over the match.

Trailing 7-4, FPU went on a 7-0 run to go up 11-7 with a block by St. Jean and Danielle Varricchio going for the final point in the run. Le Moyne used one of their two timeouts and added five points to the Ravens two over the next few possessions to make it 13-11.

The Ravens offensive attack intensified as they rallied for six in a row to go up 18-11 with Jocelyn Moody (Biddeford, Maine) serving. A Moody kill gave the Ravens a lead of seven points 20-13, but the Dolphins as they did in the first set, staged a comeback. After a ball handling error by the Dolphins which gave FPU their largest second stanza lead, the Dolphins reeled off five straight points to cut their deficit to three, 24-21. The Crimson and Grey took a timeout, hoping to cool the host's momentum and it worked as Kendall Corcoran's next serve was an error which gave FPU a 25-21 set two win and a commanding 2-0 match lead.

The Dolphins jumped out to a 4-0 lead early with Jessica Miller recording two service aces. The Ravens got on the board using a Garnhart kill to make it 4-1. Miller grew the hosts lead to five, 9-4 as she took a set from Kendall Corcoran and successfully killed it. FPU decreased the Dolphin lead to 14-12 following an attack error by Casson.

Both squads swapped points back and forth before two points by the Ravens made it 20-18 Le Moyne. FPU kept the set close as a Claire Hiwiller attack error made it 21-19, but two kills from Anna Hafoka and Casson brought the Dolphin lead up to four, 23-19 which forced FPU to take a timeout.

When the squads resumed play, Casson got the Dolphins on the brink of a third set win with a kill. The Ravens would have none of that as they chalked up five straight points, four with Moody serving to cut the Dolphin advantage to 24-23. Le Moyne then stopped play with a timeout and won the third set 25-23 on a Casson kill.

Le Moyne jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the fourth set and both teams traded possessions before the Ravens got within one 11-10 after a service error. A Leidhold kill made it 12-11 Le Moyne, but back to back errors by both squads made it 13-12 in favor of the Dolphins.

The Ravens didn't regain the lead until an attack error by Danica Durdines made it 17-16 midway through the set. Four straight errors from each teams gave the Ravens the lead again at 19-18, but Anna Hafoka tied up the contest at 19 all.

A 4-1 mini run for Le Moyne with a kill from Kendall Corcoran gave them the 23-20 lead which forced the guests to use a timeout. After the stoppage, the Dolphins and Ravens each scored a point before Danica Durdines ended the set with a kill from Corcoran.

The Dolphins looked to capitalize on the momentum they established in the third and fourth and hopped it carried over to the game deciding set. Well it did as the hosts jumped out to a huge 8-1 lead and they never trailed as they took the match clinching set by a 15-8 score.

The Ravens head home to Rindge and host NE-10 opponent Bentley on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Fieldhouse.
