Volleyball Drops Close Match To Merrimack, 3-1

Nicole Buchholz led the Ravens with 19 kills on Wednesday night against Merrimack.

RINDGE, N.H. (September 17, 2008) – Senior Ale Kuncaitis (Canton, Mass./Canton) led all players with 22 kills and added 10 digs on Wednesday night to post a double-double and lead Merrimack past the Franklin Pierce University volleyball team, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference action at Franklin Pierce’s Fieldhouse. Senior Nicole Buchholz (Broadlands, Va./Stone Bridge) led four Ravens in double figures with 19 kills.

The first two sets were closely contested, as Merrimack took the opener, 25-21, and Franklin Pierce responded with a 27-25 victory in the second set. From there, Merrimack posted a 25-14 win in the third set and squeaked out a 29-27 fourth-set victory to finish off the match.

Buchholz led Franklin Pierce with 19 kills on the evening. She was joined in double digits by junior Caitlynn Parnell (Medina, Texas/Medina), senior Emily Schultz (Salem, Wis./Westosha Central) and junior Katie Ristow (Miami, Fla./Miami Killian), who posted 12, 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Schultz tallied 16 digs while Parnell tacked on 12 digs as both completed double-doubles. Defensively, junior Erika Takegawa (Fukuoka, Japan) led the Ravens with 21 digs while Parnell tallied five blocks (two solo). Senior Karissa Hookstadt (Camarillo, Calif./Adolfo Camarillo) dished out 54 assists on the evening.

For Merrimack, Kuncaitis led the way with her 22-kill, 10-dig double-double. Junior Lisa Barr (Alberta, Canada) and sophomore Molly Cindric (Westlake Village, Calif./Oaks Christian) joined Kuncaitis in double figures offensively with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Sophomore Alyssa Pickert (Tinley Park, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) led four Warriors in double figures defensively with a match-high 25 digs while senior Kristin Applegate (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton) led all players with six blocks (one solo). Sophomore Elyse Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) posted 12 digs and a match-best 57 assists to notch a double-double.

The Ravens (3-7, 1-1 NE-10) return to the court over the weekend for a quartet of matches at the Swamp Fox Invitational hosted by Francis Marion in Florence, S.C. Franklin Pierce will face Fayetteville State and Augusta State on Friday before squaring off with Carson-Newman and host Francis Marion on Saturday. Merrimack (5-4, 1-0 NE-10) returns to action on Sept. 20 at Southern New Hampshire.
