Young-Bey Wins 200m, Women’s Track & Field Takes Fifth at Tufts
MEFORD, Mass. (January 30, 2022) -- It was yet another win for junior Nyjah Young-Bey (Montclair, N.J.) on Sunday, as she took first place in the 200-meter dash, to highlight the day for the Franklin Pierce University women's track & field team at the Branwen Smith-King Invitational, hosted by Tufts University. The Ravens finished with 54 points on the day, which was good for fifth, in a 13-team field. MIT (138.5 points) picked up a narrow victory over host Tufts (137).
In the sprints, Franklin Pierce put a pair of runners in the final of the 60-meter dash, highlighted by a second-place finish from Young-Bey in 7.93 seconds, while Saylee Missel placed eighth in 8.43 seconds. Both were able to double up and do even better in the 200-meter dash, where Young-Bey took a victory (26.07) and Missel finished fifth (27.59). For her part, Brianha Bouchard qualified for the final of the 60-meter hurdles, where she finished fourth (10.13).
Bouchard also chalked up some points in a field event as well, as she put together a leap of 4.62 meters to place fifth in the long jump.
As per usual, the Ravens saw some success in the throwing events. It was a two-three finish in the shot put for senior Samantha DeSouza (Sebago, Maine) and sophomore Tyra Felton (Sterling, Mass.), as the former had a heave of 10.98 meters, while the latter threw 10.93 meters. Felton doubled up and moved up one spot in the weight throw, where she finished second, with a throw of 13.20 meters.
The Ravens have a pair of meets on the schedule for next weekend. Those who have qualified will head to Boston for the NEICAAA (New England) Championships on Feb. 4-5, while the rest of the squad will stick in the Granite State and travel to Plymouth State on Feb. 5.
