Women’s Track & Field Third at Panther Invitational

PLYMOUTH, N.H. (February 8, 2020) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's track and field team competed in the Panther Invitational at Plymouth State University on Saturday. The Ravens took third place, out of 14 teams.

Freshman Nyjah Young-Bey (Montclair, N.J.) took second in the 60-meter dash, after her 8.14-second finish, to lead the way in the sprints. In the middle distances, sophomore Alana Thompson (Westampton, N.J.) took second for her 1:43 time in the 600-meter run. Freshman Victoria Van Houten (Wantage, N.J.) also did well in the event after her 1:55 time landed her in eighth. In the 800, senior Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.) took sixth for her 2:32 time. She returned for the mile run to take fifth for her 5:29 race. At longer distance, junior Marissa Farago (Salisbury, Mass.) fared well in the 5000 meters, as she took second for her 19:55 minute race.

The Ravens added several high finishes in the relays as well. In the 4x200-meter relay, they took first place for their 1:52 finish. The group consisted of Young-Bey, freshman Destini Hill-Edwards (Paget, Bermuda), freshman Julieth Nwosu (Brockton, Mass.) and junior Sara Joyce (Pepperell, Mass.). The Ravens had two teams compete in the 4x400, including a fourth-place finish in a time of 4:35. The lineup consisted of Van Houten, Cormier, Thompson and freshman Nadia Cathcart (Hyde Park, N.Y.). The Ravens also ran a seventh-place team, which posted a time of 5:10. The lineup consisted of junior Marisa Carbone (Scarborough, Maine), junior Lauren Stankiewicz (Naugatuck, Conn.), junior Amanda Pale (Plainville, Conn.) and freshman Alexis Collins (Monroe, N.H.).

In the field events, senior Olivia Mabbett (Milford, N.H.) took second in the high jump after her 1.53-meter jump. Sophomore Stephanie Phoenix (Wallingford, Conn.) took first place in the pole vault after vaulting 2.8 meters. Joyce took fourth in the event after her 2.5-meter vault. Sophomore Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) took a break from lighting up the high jump world and took first place in the triple jump instead this week, with a mark of 11.02 meters. In the shot put, senior Katey Comstock (Windsor, Vt.) took second for her 12.47-meter throw. She was followed by sophomore Samantha DeSouza (Sebago, Maine), who took third for her 11.39-meter throw. Freshman Becca Olsen (Newton, N.H.) took fifth in the event after her 10.56-meter throw.

The Ravens will be back in action next Friday and Saturday in Boston, for the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University.
