School Records Tumble for Track & Field at GBTC Invitational

Relay team

BOSTON (January 19, 2020) – The Franklin Pierce University track & field team sent only select athletes to compete in the Greater Boston Track Club Invitational at Harvard on Sunday, but came away with plenty to show for it regardless. A trio of school records fell on the day, while sophomore Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) hit the NCAA Championships automatic qualifying mark in the high jump for the third time already this season.

Brena, who currently ranks first in the country in the high jump, did not match her season best on Sunday, but still did enough to both win the event and clear the NCAA's automatic qualifying standard yet again. She got up and over 1.75 meters to finish first.

Brena also ran the third leg on the 4x220-yard relay for the Ravens, which finished second, with a time of 1:48.32. The all-underclass lineup consisted of freshman Destini Hill-Edwards (Paget, Bermuda), freshman Julieth Nwosu (Brockton, Mass.), Brena and freshman Nyjah Young-Bey (Montclair, N.J.). When converted to the NCAA-standard 4x200-meter distance, the time came in at 1:47.69, which stood as a new school record by over two seconds.

It would not be the only school record for Young-Bey on the day, as she also competed in the 300 meters. She finished second in a program-record time of 40.88 seconds. Meanwhile, Nwosu took home first place in the shot put, with a heave of 13.19 meters.

For the men, senior Trevor Guay (Londonderry, N.H.) was in action in the 300 meters as well. He also established a new program record, as he turned in a time of 35.49 seconds to finish second.

The Ravens return to the track next weekend, when they are scheduled to send athletes to both the John Thomas Terrier Classic at Boston University on Friday and Saturday, and the Middlebury Invitational on Saturday.
