Thompson Notches School Record, Women’s Track & Field Second at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine (January 18, 2020) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's track and field team competed at Bates University on Saturday, where they played second, out of four teams, at the Bates Invitational.

In the sprints, freshman Nyjah Young-Bey (Montclair, N.J.) took first in the 60-meter dash with her time of 8.09 seconds. Also, in short distance, freshman Stephanie Manu (Boston, Mass.) placed fifth for her 29.44-second finish in the 200.

Distance also fared well for the Ravens. Sophomore Alana Thompson (Westampton, N.J.) took fourth in the 600-meter run for her 1:42 time, breaking the school record in the process. In the mile, junior Marissa Farago (Salisbury, Mass.) crossed the line in 5:41 to secure a third-place finish. She was followed by senior Julia Cormier (Northwood, N.H.), who took fourth for her 5:48 finish, and junior Marisa Carbone (Scarborough, Maine) in fifth, with a 5:53 time. Farago returned to take third place in the 3000-meter run, after she crossed the line in 11:13.

The Ravens performed strong in the 4x800-meter relay, which took second with a 10:49 finish. They were composed of sophomore Alena Masterson (Pelham, N.H.), Thompson, freshman Nadia Cathcart (Hyde Park, N.Y.), and Cormier.

The Ravens were strong in the field events as well. Sophomore Stephanie Phoenix (Wallingford, Conn.) took third in the pole vault after clearing 2.95 meters. Fellow sophomore Paola Brena (Queretaro, Mexico) took first in the triple jump after her 10.55-meter hop, skip and jump. The Ravens swept the top three spots in the shot put. Sophomore Samantha DeSouza (Sebago, Maine) took first after throwing an 11.06 meters. She was followed by senior Katey Comstock (Windsor, Vt.), who took second with a throw of 11.83 meters, and freshman Becca Olsen (Newton, N.H.), who took third with a 10.20-meter throw. 

The Ravens will have select athletes back in action on Sunday, at the GBTC Invitational in Boston.
