Women's Tennis Pads East Regional Positioning with 6-1 Win over Daemen University
RINDGE, N.H. (4/17/23) – The Franklin Pierce women's tennis team inched one match closer to a return to the NCAA Regional Tournament on Sunday afternoon, defeating Daemen University, 6-1 at the FPU Tennis Courts to cushion their overall positioning.
Pierce, who currently sits as the fifth-seeded team in the East Region, improves to a 12-4 (8-1 NE10) overall mark with the win. Daemen University drops to 6-12 (2-3 ECC) with the loss.
In doubles, Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) and Ana Platisa (Belgrade, Serbia) took the win at the No. 1 position, 6-2, while Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) and Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) earned the win at No. 2 by the same score. To complete the sweep of doubles play, final pairing Michela Montori (Lima, Peru) and Aynara Ferraz (Canary Islands, Spain) bested opponents Mackenzie Schayes and Ailish McDevitt, securing the opening point for the Ravens with a 6-1 score.
Pierce then picked up two set wins on the No. 1 and No. 4 courts, with Maria Penalver Aguilo winning against Frida Rubio (6-4, 6-0) and Aynara Ferraz defeating Carly Armitage (6-1, 6-1) respectively. The Ravens also won in two sets at the No. 5 and No. 6 positions, thanks to wins from Zoe Asterio Correa (6-1, 6-0) and Michela Montori (6-0, 6-1). Liria Loria would hang on for the win in what would be the longest of the singles matchups, defeating Daemen's Yinett Del Leon in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 10-5).
Only one match left to go on the season for women's tennis, which will be on Tuesday, April 25th on the road at Dominican (N.Y.) with the start time to be announced.
