Women's Tennis Opens Spring Campaign With 7-0 Loss at MIT
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. (2/24/23) - The Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team opened the spring section of their 2022-23 season with a 7-0 loss on the road to MIT on Friday afternoon.
With the loss, women's tennis slides to 10-3 (8-1 NE10) overall on the year, but opens the spring 0-1. MIT moves to 2-0 overall with the victory.
To open the action, the Engineers decisively downed the Ravens in doubles play with a sweep through all three matchups. Senior Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) and junior Aynara Ferraz (Canary Islands, Spain) were the closest finishers in duo competition, but still came up short in a 6-3 loss against MIT's Yuka Perera and Artemis Pados.
In singles, the Ravens situation did not overly improve. Arguably the Ravens' best chance to get on the scoreboard came from the No. 4 singles position by graduate Ana Platisa (Belgrade, Serbia), who forced a tiebreak in the first set against opponent Sara Fernandez, narrowly dropping the decision by a 7-5 score. Fernandez would ultimately claim the overall win in fourth singles with a 6-2 second set win. All remaining sets would be decided by two or more points, with eight of twelve resulting in losses by four or more points.
Women's Tennis will take the week off before facing their next spring opponent on Sunday, March 5th when they will head down to Brandeis University for a 1:00 p.m. first serve.
