Women’s Tennis Takes Care of Business, Shuts Out Bentley in NE10 Quarterfinal, 4-0
NASHUA, N.H. (April 28, 2021) -- In just its second all-time appearance in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship, the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team earned the first postseason win in program history on Wednesday afternoon. The top-seeded Ravens took care of eighth-seeded Bentley in short order, 4-0, in the quarterfinal round. Due to wet weather in the area, the two met at the Longfellow New Hampshire Tennis & Swim Club for the match.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 10-0 and advances to the semifinal round, which is slated for Friday. The Ravens will host fourth-seeded Le Moyne at 1 p.m. With the loss, Bentley sees its season come to an end at 3-9.
Only 14 games were needed to decide the doubles points, as the Ravens breezed through first and second doubles. Second doubles was a clean, 6-0 sweep, with freshman Maria Penalver Aguilo (Las Palmas, Spain) and sophomore Laura Alvarez Tello (Vigo, Spain) taking care of sophomore Makena Romagnano and freshman Anna Lang. At first doubles, it was a 6-2 win for graduate student Himani Mor (Sonipat, India) and sophomore Liria Loria (La Paz, Bolivia) over freshman Adriana Hiraldo and junior Alessa Matuty.
Franklin Pierce had third doubles well in-hand as well, but it was left unfinished after the doubles point was secured.
The Ravens used a trio of straight-set singles victories to finish things off. At first singles, the NE10 Rookie of the Year, Penalver Aguilo, cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Hiraldo. At fifth singles, graduate student Estela Carra (Logrono, Spain) notched a 6-3, 6-0 victory over sophomore Zoe Chin. Franklin Pierce closed out the contest at fourth singles, where freshman Zoe Asterio Correa (Toronto, Ontario) picked up a 6-3, 6-4 win over freshman Remi LeSage.
Franklin Pierce had taken the first set at second, third and sixth singles as well, but all would go unfinished after the team match was decided.
