First and third doubles teams pick up wins

RINDGE, N.H. (October 16, 2011) – The first and third doubles teams both picked up victories early on Sunday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's tennis team was ultimately defeated by Saint Michael's, 7-2, in Northeast-10 Conference play at Franklin Pierce.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce concludes the fall portion of its schedule at 1-5 (1-4 Northeast-10), while Saint Michael's improves to 5-1 (5-0 Northeast-10).

Franklin Pierce opened the match with a 2-1 lead after victories at both first and third doubles. At first doubles, senior Kaitlin Krolikowski (Massapequa, N.Y.) and sophomore Natasha McCarthy (Rindge, N.H.) locked horns with Saint Michael's senior Emily Ogilvy and freshman Caroline Toutoungi in the tightest match of the day, which was eventually knotted at 8-8. The tiebreak would be just as close, as Krolikowski and McCarthy pulled out a 9-7 victory to take the match, 9-8.

Meanwhile, at third doubles, senior Nikki Chalifoux (Lebanon, Conn.) and junior Melissa Cohen (Queens, N.Y.) posted an 8-5 win over freshmen Kayla Dowd and Michelle Moreau. However, Saint Michael's would pick up victories in each of the six singles matches to post the 7-2 victory.

For Saint Michael's, both freshmen Caroline Martin and Hannah Benoit posted victories in both singles and doubles play on Sunday. First, they teamed for an 8-1 win at second doubles. Later, Martin battled to a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 6-3 win in a back-and-forth match at first singles, while Benoit swept her way to a 6-0, 6-0 win at fourth singles.
