Women’s Soccer: Ravens Win Home-Opener, 1-0

RINDGE, N.H. (09/14/24) - The Ravens opened up the home portion of their schedule with a matchup against Bridgeport University. After a domination by the Ravens for most of the game, Jenni Huttunen (Suomi, Finland) would score the only goal of the game on a penalty kick in the 61st minute to give the Ravens the 1-0 lead and eventually the 1-0 win.

Score: FPU 1, Bridgeport 0
Records: FPU 3-1 (0-0) , Bridgeport 0-1-2 (0-0-0)
Location: Sodexo Field, Rindge, N.H.
Date: September 14, 2024

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The first half saw several shots from both sides of the field. The Ravens were inches away from putting away a few of them in the net including a header just wide of the net from Aino Martikainen (Järvenpää, Finland) and a shot from inside the 18 from Gianna Derose (Brewster, N.Y.) that hit the side netting.

  • The second half was dominated by the Ravens as well. The opportunities were endless as crosses kept coming from Grace Martin (Millbury, Mass.) to give Claudia Peirce (Carver, Mass.) chances right from the top of the eight that she would send over the net.

  • A penalty kick goal in the 61st minute by Huttunen finally broke the deadlock. Ana Gerjolj (Slovenia) was fouled at the top of the box to give the Ravens the opportunity to go five for five on the year for penalty kicks for the Ravens. Huttunen placed the ball beautifully to the bottom left corner past a diving Angelina Griva.

  • The pressure did not stop for the Ravens. In the 70th minute, Kaitlyn S. Bautista (Scurry, Texas) had an opportunity from inside the box but was shut down by Griva who made a diving save. Olivia Kudrikow (Plymouth, Mass.) was there to follow up with a header that went just over the crossbar.

  • In the 78th minute, Peirce would follow a shot from Huttunen that she would send off the right post proving the Ravens continued to dominate in front of the goal but could not find the additional finishing touch. They managed to escape with a 1-0 triumph on Sodexo Field.

INSIDE THE LINES:

  • The Ravens outshot the Purple Knights 26-6.

  • The Purple Knights gave up their first goal of the season to the Ravens.

  • Emilie Fox (Bridgewater, Mass.) made three saves to Griva's nine.

  • The Ravens had 12 corner kicks.

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS: Franklin Pierce returns to Sodexo Field on Wednesday when they host the Spartans of Saint Thomas Aquinas. The match is set for 4 PM and is the team's 2024 Faculty and Staff Appreciation game in honor of Jen Saylor.
