RINDGE, N.H. (October 22, 2019) – For the second straight outing, the Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team put together the better statistical game, but came up on the short end of a 1-0 score line. This time, the Ravens were edged out by American International, which got a 32nd-minute goal from freshman midfielder Trystin Burger to pick up a Northeast-10 Conference victory at Sodexo Field. The Ravens honored the accomplishments of their senior class prior to the game.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-8-1 (3-7-0 NE10) and has lost four in a row, while American International improves to 6-7-1 (4-4-1 NE10). Franklin Pierce posted advantages of 11-9 in shot attempts, 4-3 in shots on goal and 7-2 in corner kicks on the night.

Franklin Pierce had back-to-back golden opportunities to take a lead in the first quarter-hour, but could not finish things off. In the 13th minute, freshman midfielder Camille Sahirul (North Haven, Conn.) found some space near the top of the penalty area to rip a shot which was ticketed for the inside of the left post, but was kept out only via a diving save by AIC sophomore goalkeeper Tamra Zippin.

Mere seconds later, in the 14th minute, with Zippin coming off her line to challenge, senior forward Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) lofted a high, arcing shot which got over Zipping and fell just in front of the goal line. However, before the ball could bound into the net, AIC freshman back Erin Davies was able to get behind it and clear it from danger to keep the game scoreless.

The Yellow Jackets would strike for the game's only goal in the 32nd minute, off of a corner kick, which was taken by freshman midfielder Nicole Gamberoni on the right side. Her service came down approximately 10 yards in front of the right post, right to the feet of Burger. Burger immediately fired a shot across the net and into the left side of the goal for her third score of the season.

AIC had an opportunity to double the lead at the 34-minute mark, as the Yellow Jackets earned a penalty kick. Davies took the penalty and went high with her shot, but was stymied by sophomore goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.), who got enough of the ball to deflect it off of the crossbar and keep it out of the net. Davies' follow-up shot sailed over the top of the goal and out of play.

The remainder of the first half and the entirety of the second half went without further scoring, as AIC held on to the 1-0 lead the rest of the way. Arguably Franklin Pierce's best chance of the second half came on a free kick 20 yards in front of the left post in the 81st minute. Marques took the kick and was able to curl it around the wall, but could not beat Zippin, who caught the shot cleanly.

It was the final of three saves on the night for Zippin (3-7-0), who posted her first collegiate shutout. Kane (3-6-1) finished with two saves against three shots on goal in a losing effort for the Ravens at the other end of the field.

The Ravens return to the field on Wednesday, Oct. 30, when they remain home to host Saint Michael's in an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
