No. 18 Women’s Soccer Falls at Pace, 2-1
PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. (September 21, 2019) – Pace jumped out of the gate in a hurry on Saturday night and held the lead throughout at Pace Stadium, as the Setters were able to deal the No. 18 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team a 2-1 defeat in Northeast-10 Conference play. Senior midfielder Gema Fernandez (Madrid, Spain) scored Franklin Pierce's lone goal, while junior midfielder Victoria Barris dished out a pair of assists for Pace.
With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 2-3 (1-2 NE10), while Pace improves to 7-0 (3-0 NE10).
Pace wasted no time getting things started on its home field on Saturday night. Senior midfielder Shannon Glenn cashed in her first goal of the season just 59 seconds into the proceedings, off an assist from Barris.
The game would stay stuck at 1-0 through the remainder of the first half and into the second half. Pace eventually put together what would stand as an important insurance marker in the 60th minute. Barris provided the setup again, as she assisted on the third of the campaign for senior back Marta Sadornil.
The Ravens would break up the shutout late, with a goal in the 87th minute. The unassisted tally came from Fernandez, who notched her first goal as a Raven.
However, Franklin Pierce was unable to mount another challenge towards the goal to try to find the equalizer. Pace recorded the only shot attempt over the final three minutes, as the Setters shut the door.
Pace finished the night with advantages of 14-9 in shot attempts and 8-6 in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.) made six saves against eight shots on goal and suffered the loss (1-1) in front of the Franklin Pierce net. At the other end of the field, sophomore Jade Mallea (7-0) stopped five of six shots to pick up the win for Pace.
The Ravens return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 21, when they return home to host Southern New Hampshire in an NE10 contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field in Rindge.
