Magerman, No. 14 Women’s Soccer Blitz Nyack in Season Opener, 5-0
RINDGE, N.H. (September 6, 2019) – Sophomore midfielder Jessica Magerman (Bellingham, Mass.) tallied two goals and an assist in the season's opening 26 minutes on Friday afternoon, to lead the way for the No. 14 nationally ranked Franklin Pierce University women's soccer team. Magerman's five-point day was part of a four-goal barrage in the first half, which put the Ravens well on their way to a 5-0 win over visiting Nyack at Sodexo Field. Freshman forward Marissa Orlando (Peabody, Mass.) tallied her first collegiate goal in the second half for Franklin Pierce.
With the win, the Ravens kick off their season at 1-0-0, while Nyack falls to 0-1-0.
The Ravens opened the scoring just 2:58 into the campaign on Friday afternoon, with Magerman's first of the day. From the top of the penalty area, senior midfielder Kiley Vermette (Enfield, Conn.) slipped a pass into the left side of the box for Magerman. About 15 yards from goal, Magerman did not miss from there, as she pumped a shot inside the right post to get the party started.
Less than seven minutes later, in the 10th minute, a failed clear by the Nyack back line led to the second Franklin Pierce goal. Senior forward Veronica Marques (Sao Paulo, Brazil) -- the reigning Northeast-10 Conference player of the year -- was the beneficiary, as she took possession near the top of the 18-yard box and then beat a defender on the right side. She quickly tucked a shot inside the left post to double the lead to 2-0.
It took only 76 seconds for the Ravens to find the net again, as Magerman completed her double. From the left-wing side, senior forward Sophie Cousineau (Milton, Mass.) put the ball towards the net. Nyack freshman goalkeeper Parker Betts turned the attempt aside, but the rebound came straight to Magerman at the top of the six, and she shepherded the ball into the right side of the net to make it a 3-0 game.
Magerman would tally her assist and complete her five-point afternoon in the 26th minute. Magerman attempted to shoot on the play, from near the top of the box, but had her attempt blocked by the Nyack defense. The ricochet fell right to the feet of sophomore forward Ciersten Palumbo (Holbrook, N.Y.) 15 yards in front of the left post. Palumbo settled and then put a shot top shelf, over the reach of Betts, and the rout was on at 4-0.
The Ravens -- who emptied their bench to start the second half -- tallied one final insurance marker in the 58th minute to create the 5-0 final. The play began as senior midfielder Gema Fernandez (Madrid, Spain) ripped a shot off the crossbar from the top of the penalty area. The ball stayed in play, and Fernandez tracked down her own rebound 15 yards in front of the right post. Fernandez played a one-touch pass to the top of the six-yard box for Orlando, who poked a one-touch shot past Betts and into the net for her first career goal, in her collegiate debut.
The five-goal outing was all part of a dominant statistical day for Franklin Pierce. The Ravens piled up a 29-9 edge in shot attempts, which included a 13-7 advantage in shots on goal.
Sophomore goalkeeper Casey Kane (Millis, Mass.) logged the opening 56:53 in net and stopped both shots on her goal to pick up the win (1-0-0) in the Franklin Pierce goal. She gave way to freshman goalkeeper Ithaisa Viñoly, who came on for the final 33:07 and made four saves to finish off the shutout.
Betts (0-1-0) finished with eight saves against 13 shots on goal in a losing effort at the other end of the field for Nyack.
The Ravens return to the field on Thursday, Sept. 12, when they remain home to host Westminster (Utah) in a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 7 p.m. at Sodexo Field.
