Winchendon, Mass. (11/8/2024) - The Franklin Pierce Women's Ice Hockey Team could not soar past the Stonehill Skyhawks after giving up the winning goal in the final two minutes of the third period, losing a NEWHA championship rematch 2-1.

Score: Franklin Pierce 1, Stonehill 2.

Records: Franklin Pierce 5-4 (5-2 NEWHA), Stonehill 4-8 (4-3 NEWHA).

Location: Jason Ritchie Ice Arena, Winchendon, MA.

Date: November 8th, 2024.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Ravens, seeking revenge from falling to Stonehill in last year's NEWHA championship, struck first in the contest. Halfway through the first period, junior defenseman Maggie Korneta (Naperville, IL) lit the lamp off a feed from senior defenseman Julia Stevens (Minneapolis, MN) and junior forward Anna Caumo (Brunico, Italy). The Ravens took the 1-0 lead into the break.

  • The Skyhawks turned up the heat in the second period, outshooting the Ravens 13-6 in the middle twenty minutes. It seemed like Stonehill would even the score, but senior goaltender Gwen Bowler (Canterbury, NH) stopped all 13 shots to keep the score 1-0 in favor of the Ravens.

  • The Ravens' defense would soon crumble, however. Seven minutes into the final period, Stonehill got on the board thanks to a goal from Pusle Dyring-Andersen. With the score evened at one, the Ravens tried to keep the Skyhawks at bay. However, Lily Geist had other plans, scoring the game-winning goal with just over a minute left to put the Skyhawks over the Ravens 2-1.

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS

  • The Skyhawks controlled the offensive play from the start, outshooting the Ravens 39-26. In each period they would outshoot the Ravens, especially in the second period where they rifled 13 pucks to the net to the Ravens' 6.

  • Despite the loss, the Ravens' defense was stellar for a majority of the contest. Gwen Bowler stopped 37 of 39 shots, playing her best game of the season so far.

  • The Skyhawks also dominated the faceoff circle, winning 35 draws to the Ravens' 22, and leading to more offensive scoring chances.

UP NEXT FOR THE RAVENS
