Hertl Backstops Ravens to 3-2 Win at Post

SHELTON, Conn. (10/25/24) – The Franklin Pierce Ravens women's hockey team remained undefeated in NEWHA conference play on Friday afternoon, as Jill Hertl's 38-save performance propelled the Ravens to a 3-2 win over the Post University Eagles. The Ravens reached some significant milestones in the win as they picked up their 200th win as a program, and head coach David Stockdale also picked up his 200th win at the helm.

HOW IT HAPPENED: 

  • The game remained scoreless after the first 20 minutes, with the Eagles having the advantage, outshooting the Ravens 17-6.  

  • The Eagles continued to build off their momentum to begin the 2nd period. Julia Wysocki broke the ice 5:23 into the stanza to give them the 1-0 lead.  

  • The Ravens responded with 2 goals of their own to take a 2-1 lead. Senior defenseman Julia Stevens (Minneapolis, Minn.) initiated the rush and slipped a pass to forward Brynn Levinson (Glencoe, Ill.), who then centered it to sophomore defenseman Ashley Wright (Milford, Conn.) in front of the net to tap it and tie the score 1-1, 14:36 into the frame. At 17:05, the Ravens took their first lead of the game on the power play. Sophomore defenseman Alexandria Cistolo (Berea, Ohio) dished a pass on the blue line over to freshman defenseman Casey Coffey (Hudson, Wis.) who fired a shot on goal and sophomore defenseman Jenna Sharland (San Jose, Calif.) cleaned up the loose change in front and tucked home the rebound, making it 2-1 Ravens. Casey Coffey's assist was her first collegiate point.  

  • The 2nd period continued to be chaotic. Just 12 seconds later, Maddy Noonan found the equalizer for the Eagles, tying the score at two apiece. 

  • The Ravens would get the final say in the 2nd period, taking the lead with just 21 second remaining in the frame. Senior forward Mikayla Kelley (Eagan, Minn.) fed a stretch pass to sophomore forward Emma Laroche (Highgate, Vt.) who sniped a shot from the left circle to put the Ravens ahead 3-2 at the end of the 2nd period. 

  • The Ravens held on to their lead for the 3rd period and escaped with a hard fought 3-2 road victory. 

BREAKING DOWN THE NUMBERS: 

  • The Eagles outshot the Ravens 40-21. 

  • The Ravens went 1-3 on the power play, the Eagles went 0-1.  

  • The Eagles won 34 face-offs compared to 31 from the Ravens. 

  • Junior goaltender Jill Hertl (Highland Park, Ill.) posted a phenomenal 38-save performance earning her the win (3-1-0). 

NEXT UP FOR THE RAVENS: The Ravens complete the NEWHA series with the Eagles tomorrow night at home at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon, Mass. (10/26). Puck drop is at 7 p.m.
