Women’s Ice Hockey Blows Past Castleton, 5-0
WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 5, 2021) -- The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team piled up a 20-2 advantage in shots on the way to a 2-0 lead at the end of the first period on Friday afternoon, and continued to roll from there at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Junior Ava Kison (Eau Claire, Wis.) led the way with two goals and an assist, as the Ravens put together a 5-0, non-conference win over visiting Castleton. Franklin Pierce posted a final advantage of 56-16 in shots on the day.
With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 4-4-0, while Castleton falls to 2-1-0. The Ravens are right back at it on Saturday, when they host University of New Hampshire at 3 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
The only goal Franklin Pierce would need on Friday came 8:44 into the contest. Freshman Julia Stevens (Minneapolis, Minn.) took the initial shot on the play from the left point, which was turned aside, as was a rebound chance for sophomore Claire Casey (Superior, Wis.). The third time was the charm though, as junior Reece Diener (McKinney, Texas) eventually finished things off at the right post for her first goal of the season.
The Ravens doubled the lead to 2-0 just 85 seconds later, at 10:09. From the right side, sophomore Brooke Remington (Scandia, Minn.) set up Kison in the high slot, and the latter ripped a shot off the right post and in for her third goal of the campaign. Freshman Mikayla Kelley (Eagan, Minn.) added an assist on the play as well.
The only goal of the second period came at 7:56 to push the lead out to 3-0. Sophomore Emilie Prive (Morrisville, Vt.) helped win possession on the right side with junior Jenna Ruiz (Webster, Wis.). Ruiz then went back-and-forth with junior Stefanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.), who was at the top of the zone. Ruiz eventually flipped a shot from the top of the right circle which snuck through traffic and found the net for her second of the year.
The Ravens added a pair in the third to win going away, 5-0. At 15:27, it was the third of the season for Remington, as she took a shot from the right point which was deflected home by the defense. Just 40 seconds later, at 16:07, Kison capped things with her second of the day on a 3-on-1 rush, as she had the finish at the right post off a give-and-go feed from freshman Geno Hendrickson (Warroad, Minn.).
Senior Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) stopped all 16 shots on her goal to pick up the win (1-3-0) and her 13th career shutout in the Franklin Pierce crease. At the other end of the ice, sophomore Kirsten DiCicco (2-1-0) piled up 51 saves against 56 shots in a losing effort for Castleton.
