Women’s Ice Hockey Takes Weekend Opener at LIU, 3-1

Kaitlyn Brightbill

SYOSSET, N.Y. (December 6, 2019) – Back on the road for the first time in just shy of a month, the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team surrendered just 22 shots on goal while picking up its fourth straight win, a 3-1 triumph at Long Island University. Freshman forward Katelyn Brightbill (Annville, Pa.) notched the game-winner late in the second period, while junior forward Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) added 1-1-2 and senior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.) dished out a pair of assists in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance contest at Iceworks.

With the win, Franklin Piece improves to 11-3-0 (6-2-0 NEWHA), while LIU falls to 4-10-0 (4-3-0 NEWHA). The two teams will meet again on Saturday, a LIU's other home rink, to wrap up the weekend set. Opening faceoff is set for 4:15 p.m. at Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, N.Y.

Just over a minute after LIU freshman forward Carrigan Umpherville hit the post on a 3-on-1 at the other end of the ice on the power play, Franklin Pierce opened the scoring at the 9:06 mark of the first period, seconds after killing off said power play. Parker blocked a shot in the defensive end and touched it ahead to freshman forward Becca Kniss (Eden Prairie, Minn.). Kniss kicked it in to high gear and set off the other way on a breakaway. She ultimately deked her way to the left and flipped a backhand shot past LIU freshman goaltender Ava Bailer for her sixth goal of the season.

LIU evened things up at 11:12 of the second stanza, on a slick passing play to the back door. From the middle of the left circle, freshman forward Matilda af Bjur found a lane across the slot to slip a pass through. Her pass found fellow freshman forward Renee Hoffmann streaking to the right post, and the latter had the one-time, redirect finish from there for her second goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce moved back out front with a power-play marker at the 18-minute mark to take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission. The goal would officially go in as a 5-on-4 goal, but for all intents and purposes came on a two-man advantage, as the first LIU penalty expired just two seconds before the goal. Prentiss had the original shot on the play from the middle of the right circle. After a scramble for the puck in the goalmouth, it squirted free towards the left post, where Brightbill was able to poke it into the net, while tumbling over backwards, for her sixth goal of the campaign.

The Ravens cashed in their second power-play goal of the afternoon (2-for-7) at 15:08 of the third period for some important late insurance. Parker snapped a shot home from the middle of the left circle for her team-leading eighth goal of the season. Prentiss had the feed from the middle of the blue line, while junior forward Nicole Amato (Billerica, Mass.) picked up an assist on the play as well.

Franklin Pierce stifled LIU throughout the day, as the Sharks were held to just 22 shots. Sophomore goaltender Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) finished with 21 saves to pick up the win (8-3-0). Bailey (0-4-0) stopped just 23 of 26 shots at the other end of the ice in the losing effort for LIU.
