Beck Pair Leads Women’s Ice Hockey in 5-1 Win over Buffalo State

Emily Kramer

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 23, 2019) – It was a second straight dominant outing for the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team, as the Ravens closed out a weekend sweep of Buffalo State on Saturday afternoon. Franklin Pierce rang up a shots advantage of 43-11 and used a three-goal second period to pull away for a 5-1, non-conference win at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Sophomore forward Jazmyne Beck (Kalispell, Mont.) notched her first career multiple-goal game, while senior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.) (1-1-2), junior forward Emily Kramer (Rockville, Md.) (0-2-2) and senior defenseman Hayley Doneghey (North Attleborough, Mass.) (0-2-2) all added multi-point games for the Ravens as well.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 9-3-0, while Buffalo State falls to 1-7-0.

It took less than half-a-minute for the Ravens to open the scoring on Saturday, as they were able to score on the opening shift. Junior forward Nicole Amato (Billerica, Mass.) and Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) combined to win possession below the goal line and sent the puck back to the left point for Prentiss. Prentiss -- the team's leading scorer (6-11-17) -- put a high shot through traffic from there and picked the top-left corner for her sixth goal of the season at just the 28-second mark.

Beck's first of the day, and first of the season, pushed the lead out to 2-0 at 11:51. Working off of assists from Kramer and sophomore forward Bridget Fagan (Millis, Mass.), Beck turned on the jets on the left-wing side of the offensive end. She used her speed to beat the last defender cleanly and create a partial breakaway. Beck cut out front, deked around the goalie and went to the backhand for the finish.

It was three goals in the second stanza for the Ravens, who ballooned the lead to as much as 5-0. Off a right-wing faceoff, freshman forward Reece Diener (McKinney, Texas) and Doneghey combined to set up senior forward Meg Gilbride (Braintree, Mass.) at the top of the right circle. Gilbride's shot through traffic found a home in the back of the net at 2:12 for her first goal of the campaign.

At 9:12, freshman forward Ava Kison (Eau Claire, Wis.) struck for a power-play marker, as she collected a loose puck between the hash marks and fired home her fourth goal of the year. Freshman defenseman Stefanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.) had the original shot on the play, while Prentiss picked up an assist as well. It was Prentiss' sixth point of the weekend (2-4-6).

Beck would cap Franklin Pierce's scoring at 19:32, as she was left all alone in the slot. Kramer found her with a centering pass from the right-wing corner and Beck picked the top-left corner to tally her first career multiple-goal game. Doneghey notched her second assist of the game on the play.

Buffalo State broke up the shutout just 73 seconds into the third period to create the 5-1 final. With the puck deep in the right-wing corner, senior forward Jessica Carter tried to throw a centering pass out front. However, there was nobody there for the Bengals, and puck came all the way out to the left point for sophomore defenseman Hailey Tylka. Tylka took a shot from there, which was turned aside, but senior forward Lila Toczek was on the scene to clean up the rebound at the top of the crease for her second goal in as many games.

Senior goaltender Jessica Strack (Reading, Mass.) played the first two periods in the Franklin Pierce net and picked up the win (3-0-0) after stopping all six shots she faced. Junior Kelly Turney (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) took over for the final frame and stopped four of five shots.

Junior Bri Gawronski (1-7-0) went the distance at the other end of the ice and suffered the defeat for Buffalo State after finishing with 38 saves against 43 shots.

The Ravens return to the ice on Tuesday, Nov. 26, when they remain home to close out a five-game homestand with a non-conference affair against Suffolk. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
