WINCHENDON, Mass. (February 7, 2020) – A wild second period highlighted Friday night at the Jason Ritchie Ice Arena, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team and Long Island combined for eight goals in the frame. When the dust settled, LIU held a 5-4 lead after two, and the Sharks added a pair of insurance markers in the third to pick up a 7-4 win in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play. Freshman forward Carrigan Umpherville had a hat trick, including the game-winning goal, for LIU, while freshman forward Megan Bouveur piled up five points on a goal and four assists.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 18-10-0 (10-7-0 NEWHA), while LIU improves to 10-16-0 (10-7-0 NEWHA) and pulls into a third-place tie with the Ravens. The two teams will wrap up their four-game season series on Saturday, with a 4 p.m. opening faceoff at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Franklin Pierce will honor its seven-player senior class following the game.

LIU struck for the only goal of the first period with a tic-tac-toe passing play on the power play. From up high, junior defenseman Morgan Schauer sent the puck into the left circle for Bouveur. Bouveur found a lane for a pass across the slot and freshman forward Stella Scott had the one-time finish at the right post at 17:15, for her fourth goal of the season.

Things then went bonkers in the second period. LIU made it 2-0 at 4:53, when freshman forward Abby Latorella slipped a backhand under the pads of Franklin Pierce sophomore goaltender Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) from the left side for her ninth goal of the season.

Franklin Pierce answered just 31 seconds later, and then struck twice in 24 seconds and three times in 4:09 to surge to a 3-2 lead. First, sophomore defenseman Kiki Doucette (Bridgewater, Mass.) and freshman forward Katelyn Brightbill (Annville, Pa.) combined to spring freshman forward Ava Kison (Eau Claire, Wis.) on a breakaway from the blue line in. Kison snapped her ninth of the season into the left side of the net from the hash marks at 5:24.

At 5:48, freshman forward Reece Diener (McKinney, Texas) crashed the net on a rush and jammed home the rebound of a shot by freshman line mate Becca Kniss (Eden Prairie, Minn.) for her eighth of the season, in a delayed-penalty situation. The Ravens jumped out front on another delayed-penalty goal, this one at 9:33, as a long rebound came into the right circle for senior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.), who picked the top-left corner from there for her 16th of the campaign.

LIU stemmed the tide from there and then set forth a flood of its own goals, as the Sharks scored three times in a span of 3:08 to stake claim to a 5-3 lead. First, the Ravens lost track of the player returning to the ice at the end of an LIU penalty kill. Umpherville came off the bench for her liberated teammate and was left alone well behind the defense. Freshman defenseman Grace Dima found her with a breakout pass and Umpherville snapped home a shot on the breakaway from the right circle for her 13th of the season at 11:44.

The Sharks reclaimed the lead at 13:52, as Bouveur stuffed home her own rebound at the left post to cap a coast-to-coast rush with her eighth goal of the year. A minute later, another pretty passing play set up Umpherville's second of the night, at 14:52. From the right side, freshman forward Alva Johnsson fired a pass across to Bouveur in the left circle. Bouveur went back against the grain and found a seam to Umpherville at the bottom of the right circle and the latter put home the sharp-angle shot from there.

The fifth LIU goal of the game spelled the end of the night for Ostrander, who was relieved by senior Jessica Strack (Reading, Mass.). Strack went the rest of the way in net for Franklin Pierce.

The Ravens cut the gap to 5-4 at 19:22, just after finishing off an abbreviated penalty kill. LIU failed to clear its own end, and instead a turnover put the puck right on the stick of junior forward Nicole Amato (Billerica, Mass.) in the left-wing circle. Amato had plenty of room and a lane to the net, and ultimately snapped home her 11th of the season.

However, LIU would net the only two goals of the third period to pick up some insurance and create the 7-4 final. At 3:30, freshman forward Abby Latorella put home a rebound at the right post, after the original shot on the play, from freshman defenseman Linn Thomsen at the left point, was saved. In the final minutes, freshman forward Matilda af Bjur won a left-wing faceoff to Umpherville. Umpherville curled into the high slot and buried a wrist shot to cap her first collegiate hat trick at 18:20.

Ostrander (13-10-0) suffered the loss after surrendering five goals on just 19 shots over the opening 34:52. Strack would not fare any better, as she allowed two goals on seven shots the rest of the way. Franklin Pierce outshot the Sharks on the night, 38-26, but LIU freshman goaltender Mia McLeod (6-6-0) came up with 34 saves to pick up the victory.
