Women’s Ice Hockey Collects 6-3 Win at SUNY Canton

Bridgette Prentiss

CANTON, N.Y. (January 10, 2020) – Twelve different Ravens tallied at least one point on Friday afternoon, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team opened a two-game trip to North Country with a 6-3 win over SUNY Canton in non-conference play at Roos House. Freshman forward Katelyn Brightbill (Annville, Pa.), freshman forward Ava Kison (Eau Claire, Wis.) and senior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.) all had a goal and an assist each in the victory for the Ravens.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 13-6-0, while Canton falls to 3-8-1.

The opening goal came at 2:16 of the first, directly off of a Franklin Pierce faceoff win in the right-wing circle. Freshman forward Reece Diener (McKinney, Texas) won the draw back to Prentiss at the right point. Prentiss sent the puck towards the net from there, but it was deflected en route by the Canton defense. Unfortunately for the Kangaroos, the puck still got behind the defense and back to Diener, who was now at the top of the crease and quickly put home her fifth goal of the season.

Canton leveled the score at 1-1 just 36 seconds later, at 2:52. Freshman defenseman Verity Lewis provided the breakout pass and sophomore forward Sarah Kosnaskie led the rush the other way. Kosnaskie eventually set up the second goal of the campaign for freshman forward Natasha Simioni.

Franklin Pierce struck at 10:51, and then again at 16:06, to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission. First, freshman defenseman Stefanie Caban (Fitchburg, Mass.) forced a turnover deep in her own end and senior defenseman Delaney Guimont (Bedford, N.H.) took off the other way. In the offensive end, Guimont dished the puck to the right for freshman forward Becca Kniss (Eden Prairie, Minn.), who chalked up her eighth goal of the season. It would also be the eighth of the season for Prentiss 5:11 later, as she forced a neutral-zone turnover, set off into the offensive end and snapped a shot home from the right circle. Junior forward Nicole Amato (Billerica, Mass.) picked up the lone assist on the play.

Canton got back-to-back goals from freshman forward Hannah Desrochers -- the first two goals of her collegiate career -- at 12:04 and 17:50 of the second period to draw even at 3-3. Desrochers did all the work herself on the first of the pair, as she skated in and slapped a shot into the upper reaches of the net. Later, junior forward Ashley Gillies worked the puck to freshman defenseman Caeley Smith on the left side. Smith found a passing lane into the low slot for Desrochers, who had the one-time finish.

Franklin Pierce took the lead for good at the 18:08 mark, just 18 seconds after Canton had tied the game. Brightbill forced a turnover as the Kangaroos attempted to clear their defensive end. She then set up Kison on the right side, for the latter's seventh of the season.

The Ravens were out-shot 27-24 on the afternoon, including 13-7 in the third period, but Franklin Pierce scored the only two goals of the third period to escape with the 6-3 win. First, Kison and junior forward Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.) combined to win possession behind the net, with the latter centering the puck to Brightbill for her eighth goal of the year at 4:30. Sophomore forward Bridget Fagan (Millis, Mass.) capped the scoring at 15:23, as she banged home a rebound from right on top of the crease for her third goal of the season. Junior forward Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) had the initial shot on the play, from the left circle, while freshman defenseman Bethany Ross (Canton, Mich.) tacked on an assist as well.

Senior goaltender Jessica Strack (Reading, Mass.) finished with 24 saves against 27 shots, and stopped all 13 shots she faced in the third period, to pick up the win (4-0-0) in the Franklin Pierce crease. Freshman Sirena Alvarez started in net for Canton, but stopped just five of eight shots before being relieved after the third Franklin Pierce goal. Senior Brooke Susac (0-6-0) went the rest of the way and finished with 13 saves against 16 shots while taking the loss.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Jan. 11, when they travel to SUNY Potsdam for a non-conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 3 p.m. at Maxcy Ice Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
