MANCHESTER, N.H. (December 4, 2018) – After surrendering six goals on Saturday afternoon, the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team put together a renewed commitment to defensive hockey on the road on Tuesday night. The Ravens held Saint Anselm to 30 shots on goal – one of only three teams to do so this season – but it would not quite be enough in the New England Women's Hockey Alliance contest at Sullivan Arena. The Hawks got a third-period deflection goal from senior forward Caley Mueller to break a 1-1 tie and deal the Ravens a 2-1 loss in the defensive battle.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 7-6-0 (4-5-0 NEWHA), while Saint Anselm improves to 10-1-1 (8-0-1 NEWHA).

For much of the night, the only scoring would come as the two teams traded goals just 65 seconds apart in the middle of the first period. The Ravens opened the scoring with a power-play marker at the 10:45 mark. From the right side, sophomore forward Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) sent the puck up top to junior defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.). Prentiss let her shot fly through copious traffic from the middle of the blue line, and the puck found its way untouched to the back of the net for her second goal of the season. Sophomore forward Marissa Massaro (Brockton, Mass.) added an assist on the play as well.

Saint Anselm quickly had the answer at the 11:50 mark. An attempted clear by the Franklin Pierce defense from deep in its own end did not work out and saw the puck pop right out in front of the net. Freshman forward Kelly Golini was on the scene below the hash marks and put away a quick shot to level the game at 1-1. Freshman defenseman Mackenzie Kaasa and freshman forward Amanda Nylander provided the assists on Golini's sixth goal of the campaign.

The game would go without another goal until after the midway point of the third period. Compared to the rest of the game, the third period was relatively high-flying, as the two teams combined for 20 shots. Despite multiple chances at both ends of the ice, it was Saint Anselm which put home the only tally of the stanza, with the game-winning goal on the power play at the 12:07 mark. Freshman forward Erin Meyers walked the puck off the left-wing half wall and threw a shot towards the net. Mueller was positioned en route, near the bottom of the circle and got a deft tip on the puck to pick up her seventh goal of the year. Junior forward Amanda Conger added an assist as well, as the game's nine points came from nine different players.

Freshman goaltender Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) finished with 28 saves against 30 shots, but suffered the loss (2-2-0) in net for Franklin Pierce. Senior netminder Maddie Scavotto (6-1-1) stopped 22 of 23 shots to pick up the win for Saint Anselm at the other end of the ice.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 7-8, when they wrap up the semester with a trip to Buffalo State for a non-conference weekend series. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday at Buffalo State Ice Arena in Buffalo, New York.
