MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 2, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team opened the scoring on Friday night at Sullivan Arena, but the lead was not long-lived. Saint Anselm evened things up just 85 seconds later, and then poured in the next seven goals as well, on the way to an 8-2 win over the visiting Ravens in New England Women's Hockey Alliance play. Sophomore forward Katy Meehan had four points (2-2-4), including the game-winning goal, on the night for Saint Anselm.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 4-1-0 (2-1-0 NEWHA), while Saint Anselm improves to 3-0-1 (2-0-1 NEWHA). The two teams will wrap up the home-and-home weekend series at Franklin Pierce on Saturday night. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.

Franklin Pierce opened the scoring at the 9:31 mark of the first period. Off of a faceoff to the left of the Saint Anselm goal, sophomore forward Haley Parker (Londonderry, N.H.) controlled the puck along the left-wing half boards. She sent the puck back to the left point for junior defenseman Katie Neuburger (Fayetteville, N.Y.). Neuburger made a move to find a shooting lane and sent the puck towards the net. Saint Anselm junior goaltender Michaela Kane made the initial save on the play, but junior forward Meg Gilbride (Braintree, Mass.) was on the scene to bang home the rebound for her second goal of the season.

Saint Anselm evened the scoring just 1:25 later, at 10:56. Junior forward Jamie Gottwald drove the puck to the right side of the net and then fed it back out front, where she found sophomore forward Jayden Young for the latter's first goal of the campaign.

Saint Anselm would follow up with four goals in the second period to surge to a 5-1 lead. First, Gottwald picked up her first of the year as well, at 2:26, as she tipped home a shot from the point by freshman defenseman Mackenzie Kaasa. Meehan added her first assist of the night as well.

Meehan would strike for the eventual game-winner, and her fourth goal of the year, at the 7:04 mark. She had the finish on a 3-on-2 rush into the offensive end, while Young and junior forward Amanda Conger provided the helpers. Just 28 seconds later, Conger made it 4-1 at 7:32, with her third of the season. She put the puck away from out front, with assists credited to senior forward Caley Mueller and freshman forward Erin Meyers.

Junior forward Kaley Campbell capped the second-period scoring at 16:12, with her third goal of the year, just after a power-play had expired. Campbell's shot from the high slot kicked off the skate of a defenseman and wound up in the net, while junior defenseman Haley Marshall and sophomore forward Madison Sprague picked up the assists.

It was more of the same on the other side of the intermission, as Saint Anselm struck for the first three goals of the third period as well. A turnover in the defensive end led to the first collegiate goal from Kelly Golini at 8:26, off of assists from sophomore defenseman Kathleen LeFebre and sophomore forward Mary Lambert. At 10:07, Gottwald picked up her second of the night, as she put away a loose puck out in front of the net, with Meehan and Marshall tallying assists. Meehan rounded out the Saint Anselm scoring at 13:47, as she put a shot home blocker side from the top of the circle to cap her four-point outing, off of assists from Young and sophomore defenseman Gabby Monaco.

Franklin Pierce picked up the game's final goal, in a delayed-penalty situation, at the 15:22 mark, to create the 8-2 final. Sophomore defenseman Hayley Doneghey (North Attleborough, Mass.) took control in her own end, to the right of the Franklin Pierce net, and banked the puck up the boards to start the zone exit. The winger on the scene was interfered with by a pinching Saint Anselm defenseman, but the puck squirted past the collision and into the neutral zone. Junior forward Kelsey Holmes (Warwick, R.I.) picked it up there and led the rush into the offensive end. She ultimately fed to freshman forward Stephanie Proteau (Wolcott, Conn.) who finished off the rush for her first collegiate goal.

Sophomore goaltender Kelly Turney (Fort Gratiot, Mich.) started in net, made 19 saves against 24 shots over the first two periods and suffered the loss (2-1-0) in the crease for Franklin Pierce. Freshman Emme Ostrander (Westborough, Mass.) took over for the third period and stopped 10 of 13 shots in her collegiate debut.

At the other end of the ice, Kane (3-0-0) stopped 17 of 19 shots to pick up the win for Saint Anselm.
