Three-Goal Second Hurts Women’s Ice Hockey in 4-1 Loss to Saint Anselm

WINCHENDON, Mass. (November 3, 2017) – The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team struck first on Saturday afternoon, but Saint Anselm would answer with three goals of its own in the second period to surge to a 3-1 lead. The Hawks added another in the third for good measure to come away with the 4-1 win at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce falls to 1-4-0, while Saint Anselm improves to 5-0-0 and completes the weekend sweep of the Ravens.

After the first period went scoreless, Franklin Pierce jumped out front just 31 seconds into the second period. Sophomore defenseman Katie Neuburger (Fayetteville, N.Y.) held the puck in the offensive zone at the right point and pushed it off to senior forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.). Brolsma stepped into the right circle and took a shot, which was deflected at the edge of the crease by sophomore forward Kelsey Holmes (Warwick, R.I.), who notched her first goal of the season.

For Brolsma, the assist marked the 95th point of her career.

Saint Anselm answered with a 4-on-4 goal just 66 seconds later. Sophomore forward Amanda Conger jammed the puck home at the right post at the 1:37 mark, for her second of the season, while senior forward Ashley Moran picked up the lone assist.

The Hawks jumped to a 2-1 lead at the 14:18 mark, on the first of the season for senior forward Kaitlyn Spillane. The speed of sophomore forward Kaley Campbell led a rush into the offensive end, and she eventually laid the puck off for Spillane near the bottom of the right circle. Senior goaltender Madison Murray (Berkley, Mich.) got a piece of Spillane's shot, but the puck still got behind her and trickled over the line.

Less than two minutes later, at 16:12, Saint Anselm made it a 3-1 game with a power-play marker. Freshman defenseman Kathleen LeFebre picked up her first collegiate goal as she wired a shot cleanly through traffic from the left point to pick the top corner of the net. Junior forward Caley Mueller provided the feed on the play.

The Hawks added the third period's only goal, a power-play tally at 10:39, to create the 4-1 final. Right off a faceoff, Moran won the draw to freshman forward Madison Sprague. The latter put a shot on goal, which Murray could not handle cleanly, and the puck wound up in the back of the net for Sprague's second goal of the campaign.

Murray (1-2-0) finished with 19 saves against 23 shots on goal and suffered the loss in the crease for Franklin Pierce. Junior netminder Maddie Scavotto (3-0-0) stopped 14 of 15 shots at the other end of the ice to pick up the win for Saint Anselm.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Nov. 10, when they remain home to host Saint Michael's. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena.
