Women’s Ice Hockey Dominant Throughout in 5-0 Win at Saint Michael’s

SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. (November 4, 2016) – The Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team piled up a 44-17 advantage in shots on goal at Cairns Arena on Friday night, controlling play throughout the game in a 5-0 win at Saint Michael's in New England Hockey Conference play. Junior forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.) scored twice to lead the way, while senior forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) and freshman forward Kayla Trujillo (Pueblo, Colo.) had a goal and two assists each in the victory for the Ravens.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 2-1-0 (1-1-0 NEHC), while Saint Michael's falls to 0-3-0 (0-1-0 NEHC).

Despite a 16-3 shots advantage in the first period, Franklin Pierce struck only once in the opening stanza, with 3:26 remaining. Trujillo worked the puck to the top of the left circle for Ketterman, who sent it to freshman forward Meg Gilbride (Braintree, Mass.) in front of the right post. Gilbride cashed in her first collegiate goal from there, beating Saint Michael's senior goaltender Abby Burke on the glove side and into the right side of the net to open the scoring at the 16:34 mark.

The Ravens added a pair of goals just 40 seconds apart in the second period to open up a 3-0 lead. First, Ketterman won a battle on the half wall and got the puck to Trujillo in the high slot. The latter snapped a shot into the left side of the net from there, beating Burke on the blocker side for her first career score, at the 10:01 mark.

Just 40 seconds later, at 10:41, Brolsma would strike for her second goal of the season. Trujillo got the puck to freshman forward Alli Sugar (Canton, Conn.), who curled behind the net and into the right-wing corner. Sugar then slipped a pass into the low slot for Brolsma, who had the quick finish from there.

Two insurance goals in the third period created the 5-0 final. On the power play at the 15:09 mark, Ketterman capped her three-point night by jamming home a rebound for her second goal of the campaign. Gilbride had batted the puck out of midair and forced Burke to make a sprawling save to set up the rebound goal, while senior defenseman Katie Flynn (Sandwich, Mass.) provided an assist as well.

The game's final goal came at the 17:27 mark, on Brolsma's second of the game. The goal was an unassisted marker, as she snapped a shot between Burke's pads from the bottom of the left-wing corner.

Senior goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) stopped all 17 shots on her goal to pick up the win (2-1-0) and her second straight shutout, which was the ninth shutout of her career. Burke (0-2-0) finished with 39 saves against 44 shots and suffered the loss in the crease for Saint Michael's.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Nov. 5, when they travel to University of New England for an NEHC contest. Opening faceoff is set for 4 p.m. at Harold Alfond Forum in Biddeford, Maine.
