Women’s Ice Hockey Shuts out Becker, 4-0, in Home Opener

WINCHENDON, Mass. (October 29, 2016) – Junior forward Alex Brolsma (Bloomington, Minn.) and senior forward Michelle Holmes (Goffstown, N.H.) had a goal and an assist each on Saturday night, as the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team rolled to a 4-0 win over Becker in non-conference play at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena. Senior forward Lanie Matsumoto (Fort Collins, Colo.) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the first period, as Franklin Pierce won its home opener.

With the win, Franklin Pierce improves to 1-1-0, while Becker falls to 1-1-0.

Franklin Pierce got the only goals it would need in the final five minutes of the first period on Saturday, as the Ravens jumped to a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission. First, at the 16:14 mark, Matsumoto capitalized on a turnover to put home her first goal of the season from the slot, as she rang her shot off the left post and in. Freshman forward Meg Gilbride (Braintree, Mass.) and senior forward Nina Danforth (Stratford, Conn.) picked up the assists on the play.

With just three seconds to play in the frame, Brolsma made it a 2-0 lead for the Ravens. Senior forward Marisa Ketterman (Palmer, Alaska) picked up the primary assist on the play, as she fed a pass to Brolsma in the left-wing circle. Brolsma then walked the puck out into the slot and picked the top-right corner for her first goal of the campaign. Freshman forward Alli Sugar (Canton, Conn.) added an assist as well. Franklin Pierce piled up a 25-6 advantage in shots on goal in the first period, en route to a 54-10 margin on the night.

The Ravens would add a pair of insurance markers early in the third period to create the 4-0 final. Just 13 seconds into the stanza, in a 4-on-4 situation, Brolsma added an assist to go with her first-period goal. She slipped a pass from the left side across the slot to Holmes, who finished at the right post for her first goal of the year. Freshman defenseman Bridgette Prentiss (Buffalo, N.Y.) picked up her first of two third-period assists on the play.

Franklin Pierce capped the scoring with a 5-on-3 goal at the 6:13 mark of the third. The Ravens worked the puck around the perimeter, with Holmes on the left side feeding Prentiss at the blue line. Prentiss then sent the puck to senior forward Alysha Raimo (Fitchburg, Mass.) in the right circle. Raimo found space to shoot from there and cleanly beat the goaltender for her first goal of the season, which was also Franklin Pierce's lone power-play goal on seven chances on the night.

Senior goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) needed to make just 10 saves to pick up the win (1-1-0) and her eighth career shutout. At the other end of the ice, sophomore Madison Rigsby (0-1-0) was peppered with 54 shots and came up with 50 saves for Becker in defeat.

The Ravens return to the ice on Friday, Nov. 4, when they travel to Saint Michael's for a New England Hockey Conference contest. Opening faceoff is set for 7 p.m. at Cairns Arena in South Burlington, Vt.
