Women’s Ice Hockey Blanked in Season Opener at Saint Anselm, 2-0

O'Neil makes 35 saves

O'Neil O'Neil's 35 saves on Friday at Saint Anselm are the second-most in program history.

MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 7, 2014) – Sophomore goaltender Shannon O'Neil (Tewksbury, Mass.) made a career-best 35 saves on Friday afternoon, but the Franklin Pierce University women's ice hockey team dropped a 2-0 decision on the road at Saint Anselm in ECAC East play at Sullivan Arena. Sophomore forwards Alison Butler and Alison Quinn had a goal and an assist each to lead the way for Saint Anselm.

With the loss, Franklin Pierce opens its season at 0-1-0 (0-1-0 ECAC East), while Saint Anselm improves to 3-0-0 (1-0-0 ECAC East). The game was the inaugural ECAC East contest for Franklin Pierce, which joins the Conference in its third season of play.

The Hawks piled up a 37-16 advantage in shots on Friday afternoon, including a dominant, 13-3 margin in the second period. The barrage allowed O'Neil to pile up 35 saves, though she still suffered the loss (0-1-0) between the pipes for Franklin Pierce. At the other end of the ice, senior Lindsey Brown made 16 saves to pick up the win (1-0-0) and notch her first shutout of the season.

The Hawks got the only goal they would need in the final minutes of the first stanza. Quinn and senior forward Sabrina Iannetti set up the first of the season for Butler at the 18:12 mark.

After the second period went scoreless, Saint Anselm struck again in the third frame to create the 2-0 final. This time, Quinn notched her second of the season, while Butler dished out the lone assist.

The Ravens return to the ice on Saturday, Nov. 8, when they return home to host New England College in an ECAC East contest. Opening faceoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Jason Ritchie Ice Arena in Winchendon.
