Women’s Golf Leapfrogs Three Spots, Places 10th in Spring Opening Tournament
HARTSVILLE, S.C. (March 19, 2019) – The Franklin Pierce University women's golf team chipped away nine strokes from their first-round score and climbed three slots on the team leaderboard to finish in 10th place overall at the conclusion of the Coker College Cobra Women's Spring Invitational.
The tournament was held at the Hartsville Country Club, a par-72, 5,828-yard course. The Ravens combined to shoot 665 (+89) over the 36 holes and knocked off nine strokes (328, +40) from their first round (337, +49) team total. Anderson College (616, +40) and host Coker (619, +43) remained in the top two slots however Columbus State University (630, +54) surged into a share for third with Barton College.
Pierce had a duo of golfers place within the top-40. Junior Taylor Hartley (Battle Ground, Wash.) shot a 164 (+20) good enough for 34th place and team captain Zoe Yamamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii) sliced off four strokes from her Monday card to total a 166 (+22) which tied her for 38th overall. Hartley led the Ravens in total pars (20) and Yamamoto tacked on a team-high three birdies.
Round One – Monday
Hartley paced the Ravens scoring ending day one firing an 81 (+9) which put her in a tie for 26th place. Freshman Christine Songcuan (Lancaster, Calif.) tied for 41st on the individual leaderboard producing an 83 (+11) card. Yamamoto tacked on an 85 (+13) while Sarah Daley (Beverly, Mass.) and Sydney Caron (Gorham, Maine) totaled 88 (+16) and 98 (+26) scores respectively.
Round Two – Tuesday
Three of the five Crimson and Grey golfers subtracted strokes from their Monday showings. Daley was the most improved Raven dropping eight putting home a team tournament low round 80 (+8). Yamamoto cut four from her round (81, +9) and Caron deducted one stroke turning in a 97 (+25) scorecard.
Franklin Pierce travels back north to Rindge and will return to practice before their next tournament, the Assumption College Invitational at the Blackstone National Golf Club in Sutton, Mass. on Saturday, April 13.
