PREVIEW: Women’s Bowling Travels to ECC Championship on Long Island
RINDGE, N.H. (March 21, 2018) – The Franklin Pierce University women's bowling team travels south to host Adelphi University for the 2018 East Coast Conference (ECC) Championship this coming weekend at the Port Jeff Bowl in Port Jefferson, N.Y.
This will be the third year of the ECC Championship Tournament. Franklin Pierce looks to improve their standing after finishing fourth for the second straight season last year in the conference while Colleen Kelly (Quincy, Mass.) was the lone FPU selection to the All-Tournament team.
The host Panthers are the highest nationally-ranked ECC program as they come in at 11th on the March edition of the National Tenpin Coaches Association Poll. Adelphi is followed by no. 21 Kutztown University and no. 23 Lincoln Memorial University. The Crimson and Grey received votes in the poll but were not ranked.
SCOUTING THE RAVENS
The Crimson and Grey finished the 2016-17 season last year with a 52-42 mark as they matched the single-season program win mark set during the inaugural 2014-15 campaign. This year, the Ravens finished at 49-41 (.544) which was good enough for a fourth-place finish in the ECC.
The Ravens are led by one-time ECC Bowler of the Week Jessica Davies (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Jenna Harrington (Barneveld, N.Y.) as well as sophomore Krysta Peirce (Casco, Mich.).
EARLIER THIS SEASON
This season saw the Ravens snag 12 wins versus nationally-ranked opponents. The team earned their signature win of the year during day two of the KU Invitational on January 20, 2018, against the previously no. 4 ranked Vanderbilt University Commodores by an 896-822 score.
Over the weekend of February 24-25, the Crimson and Grey earned their highest finish of the year, a third-place finish, during the Molloy 2-Day Tournament. FPU completed the weekend a 7-3 with a total pinfall of 8,621. Franklin Pierce also placed sixth place three times at the New Jersey Jamboree in November, the Golden Bears Classic in February and the Hawk Flight Invitational in March.
During the Golden Bears Classic, Davies brought home the Tournament MVP Award as she averaged a tourney-high 19.86 baker frame average. Peirce was chosen to the All-Tournament First Team after rolling a 19.09 barker mark. In October at the Sacred Heart Bowl of the Cure, freshman Skyler Mulligan-Brown (New Milford, Conn.) won the Singles Title after averaging 223 a frame across the singles ladder.
The Ravens dueled conference opponents numerous times this past season and they combined for a 14-7 (.667) mark which included four wins over Kutztown and Wilmington however, Adelphi and Molloy handed the Ravens five of their seven setbacks.
