Second Half Powers Women’s Basketball to 68-47 Win over Le Moyne
RINDGE, N.H. (January 27, 2022) -- Things started off slow for the Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team in the Fieldhouse on Thursday night, but they finished red-hot. The Ravens surrendered just 12 second-half points, to 41 of their own, as they stormed past visiting Le Moyne, 68-47, in Northeast-10 Conference play. Senior Lisa Sulejmani (Burlington, Vt.) led the way with a busy stat line of 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals. Senior Emma Brinker collected 20 points of her own in defeat for Le Moyne.
With the win, the Ravens move to 8-6 (4-4 NE10), while the Dolphins fall to 10-3 (8-2 NE10) on the season.
In the first quarter, the Dolphins started off strong and outscored the Ravens, 18-9. Le Moyne was led by Brinker, who had six points. Junior guards Saeeda Abdul-Aziz and Lytoya Baker poured in five points each. The Ravens struggled on offense in the first quarter, as they went just 4-for-15 from the floor.
The Ravens started to turn the tables in the second quarter, thanks to Sulejmani, who scored eight points, and fellow senior Emma Carter (Bristol, Vermont), who added six more. Still though, the Ravens trailed 35-27 at halftime.
Franklin Pierce turned on the afterburners in the second half. The Ravens chalked up a 20-7 advantage in the third quarter to take a five-point lead (47-42) and were then even better in a 21-5 fourth quarter, which turned the game into a rout. Le Moyne made just four field goals after halftime (4-for-31) and came up empty on nine attempts from three-point range.
In all, the Dolphins shot just 25% from the field (18-for-72), including a dismal 13.6% from the three-point line (3-for-22). Franklin Pierce shot 39.1% from the floor (25-for-64) and 28% from beyond the arc (7-for-25).
Sulejmani led the Ravens with 20 points and Carter finished the night with 16 points, while sophomore Gisela Vazquez Segura (Igualada, Spain) chipped in 11 to make it three in double digits. Sophomore Anna Badosa Soler (Girona, Spain) had just five points, but contributed a team-best 11 rebounds and seven assists to the cause.
Brinker finished the night with a double-double with 20 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, as she carried most of the load for the Dolphins. Senior Jenna Zimmerman grabbed 11 rebounds for Le Moyne.
The Ravens will stay at home for another NE10 matchup on Saturday against New Haven at 1:30 p.m., weather permitting.
