Le Moyne’s Three Point Barrage Too Much for Ravens to Overcome
SYRACUSE, N.Y. (January 14, 2020) – The Franklin Pierce University women's basketball team wrapped up their three-game road trip with an 83-52 setback to Northeast-10 Conference opponent Le Moyne College Tuesday night on Ted Grant Court. With the win, the Dolphins improve to 9-6, 5-3 NE10 while Pierce drops to 6-9 and remain winless in the conference.
The crimson and grey were led by sophomore forward Emma Carter (Bristol, Vt.) who scored a team-high 13 points on 5-of-11 (45.5%) shooting and 3-of-6 (50%) from distance. Carter also snared six rebounds. Classmate Izzy Lipinski (Farmington, Conn.) notched her second consecutive double-double, her fourth of the season and 10th of her collegiate career with 10 points and a contest best 10 rebounds – four offensive with a team-high five helpers while shooting 5-of-8 (62.5%) from the floor.
For Le Moyne, Mckayla Roberts was one of five players to reach double figures as she scored a game-high 27 points to go along with nine dimes, four rebounds and seven three pointers (7-of-11, 63.6%). The hosts shot 47.1% (16-of-34) from three-point land and only turned the ball over five times. FPU committed 19 turnovers and their counterparts tallied 21 points off the Raven mistakes.
FPU took a 5-0 edge in the early stages as they won the tip and Sophia Holmes (Oakland, Maine) dashed to the right side of the rim for two and Rylee Skinner (Leominster, Mass.) knocked down a three-ball from the left corner. Le Moyne answered on the next possession when a second chance offensive board led to a Roberts left-wing trifecta. A few possessions passed until Lipinski upped the margin to four, 7-3, however, the Dolphins countered with their second three of the period.
A media stoppage happened and the hosts jumped in front for the first time 12-9 using back-to-back triples off the stroke of Jenna Zimmerman and Liz Millea. Carter pulled the Ravens within one slashing through the left side of the paint for a scoop off the glass. Roberts connected on another long-range attempt, her second of the period to expand the LC score to 15-11. Holmes made two free throws with one second left making it a 15-13 game at the end of one.
Down 17-13, Lipinski drove through traffic on the right block and muscled up an and1 conversion minus the free throw to bring it to a 17-15 match. Le Moyne kept on shooting deep shots as they outscored the Ravens 9-4 across 4:45 of the quarter with Roberts again hitting a trey, this time from the right corner to give them a 24-17 advantage.
A Demi Akins (Cambridge, Mass.) layup close to the rim temporally halted the 11-4 start for the hosts, but Roberts kept raining from three-point land, again in the corner to open up the first double-digit lead of the game, 29-19 with 3:40 left until the intermission. Akins made another post-move, this time with the shot clock winding down to drop the Raven deficit into single figures until the eighth three-point conversion of the half reestablished a 12 point, 33-21 Le Moyne advantage. Two Carter threes were the final points of the half for the crimson and grey as they trailed 35-27 at the break.
Lipinski got the Ravens on the board first in the third quarter taking an Akins feed and putting it high off the glass and in, putting the deficit at two possessions 35-29. Following the Lipinski layup, the Dolphins swam to an 11-2 scoring spurt with Roberts banging home a three and an old fashioned three-point play. They led by 15, 46-31 with 6:14 remaining in the third.
FPU took a timeout and the Le Moyne run increased to 14-2 via another Roberts three. Cooney put an end to the binge with a deuce from the restricted area. The Dolphins promptly went on a game shaping 16-7 burst capped off with an Erin Fouracre three-ball to conclude the third with a 65-40 lead. Le Moyne led by a high of 35 points late in the fourth quarter.
The Ravens will be back home on Saturday for a matinee tilt against conference opponent the College of Saint Rose at 1:30 p.m.
