Ravens Drop First Conference Battle 65-49 at Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. (November 15, 2017) – Franklin Pierce University women's basketball players Jemma Thacker (Nairne, South Australia) and Mya Mosley (Worcester, Mass.) scored 11 points apiece as the Ravens suffered their first Northeast-10 Conference setback to Saint Anselm College 65-49 Wednesday evening in the Stoutenburgh Gym. The loss sends the Ravens to 1-2 overall and 0-1 NE10 while the Hawks soar to 2-1, 1-0 NE10.

Both Thacker and Mosley came down with four rebounds while Mosley handed out three assists. Freshman guard Hannah Everidge (Baldwinville, Mass.) tallied eight points and three boards as well. The Hawks were led by sophomore Shannon Ryan who poured in a game-high 23 points to go along with seven caroms and three blocks.

The Ravens struggled with their shots in this one as they converted 19-of-50 (38.0%) of their attempts while the Hawks made 27-of-54 (50.0%) and showed great ball movement with 20 assists on their 27 field goal conversions.

Franklin Pierce scored the opening points of the game when Diondra Woumn (Lynn, Mass.) banked in a jumper off the glass from the left block. Saint Anselm proceeded to miss their opening six shots of the contest. Thacker pushed the Ravens ahead 4-0 with a driving layup through the paint. The Ravens press led to a Hawk turnover, but the Crimson and Grey could not capitalize on the miscue.

Emma Daly went to the line and split a pair of free throws for the Hawks first points of the duel as they trailed 4-1. A few possessions later, Ryan while doubled teamed buried a baseline jumper as she was fouled. Ryan missed the free throw as the Ravens clung to a one-point lead. Following an FPU turnover, Clairee Putnam gave the hosts their first lead as she ran the baseline for an easy two, which was part of an 8-2 run to push the hosts ahead 11-5. Pierce cut their deficit to two, 11-9 on the strength of a Sophia Holmes (Oakland, Maine) three-ball from the right wing and a Thacker freebie, but Grace Guachione ended the quarter by tallying the final five points as the Hawks led 16-9 after one.

Kelsey Mayo (Oakland, Maine) cut the Raven deficit to four, as she corralled an offensive board after a Mosley missed layup and pushed the rock off the glass for the second chance points while she was hacked. Mayo notched the and1 as the Ravens trailed 16-12. Saint Anselm moved their lead to seven before Everidge buried a trey from the top of the key to bringing the Raven deficit back to four, 21-17. On the ensuing trip down the court, the Ravens press forced a 10 second-backcourt call that gave possession back to their side. FPU regained possession and immediately made it a two-point game as freshman forward Freya Cooney (Woodbridge, England) sank a mid-range jumper off a Thacker feed. This would be the closest the Ravens would come to regaining the advantage. Over the next few possessions, the Hawks out produced the Ravens 15-6 to lead by 11, 36-25 as Guachione connected on another long-range attempt. Thacker ended the half with an offensive board and a layup as the Ravens trailed by nine 36-27 at the intermission.

In the third quarter, the lead hovered around 11 and 13 points in favor of the hosts until Ryan was fouled in the paint while attempting a fade-away jumper. She made the free throw as the Hawks led 49-35 with 4:18 left in the third. Raven freshman forward Hannah Martin (Woodland Hills, Calif.) cut into the deficit by connecting on a layup, before Hawk junior guard Ashley Briggs manufactured a three-ball with 45 seconds left to give the home squad a game-best 52-37 edge through three periods.

The Hawks began the fourth with a 13-2 run over the opening six minutes of the frame as they held the largest lead of the contest at 65-39. Franklin Pierce concluded the match with the final 10 points as they dropped their first conference game.
